Re: Bees flying off with pupa

I have seen bees flying off carrying a dead bee. I guess this is the same thing, mortuary duty.

    Beech Mountain Bees

I am relating our very positive experience with Beech Mountain Bees. They are a family owned full service bee supply company in the High Country of North Carolina located in the Beech...

    Is this Swarm Queenless?

Finally succeeded in getting a swarm. Unfortunately, the bees chose my ceramic sculpture over the few bee hive/traps I put out. I am planning on letting them go a bit and then transfering them and...

Re: Bees are Toying with Me

I must have no life since I spent several hours yesterday watching the bee behavior around my sculpture (one that had a swarm take residence in it last year) and the hive I set up to try and trap...

Re: Bees are Toying with Me

Whatever they are their behavior is interesting. One even took up a guard type position at the entrance and was fighting any other bees that tried to enter.

    Bees are Toying with Me

We put a medium 10 frame hive with about 6 new frames (don't have any drawn comb) in it on top of a sculpture that a swarm moved into last year. I have some beeswax and lemongrass oil in it, too. I...
  7. Re: cheap endoscopic type scope to peer at brood thru entrance available?

Might cost less for a top bar hive with an observation window.

Minimum Amount of Bees for New Hive

Assuming food is available, either by supplementary feeding or natural sources, what is the minimum threshold one could use to start a new hive?

  10. Re: Hive as Trap- with or without screen bottom

    Thanks,

I figured they would be more apt to select a dark environment. I am taking all your advice and covering up the screen for now. If I am lucky to get a swarm, I will remove it.

    Will...
  11. Hive as Trap- with or without screen bottom

Lots of bees flying around our yard and we have set out a small hive with some lemongrass oil as an attractant hoping to capture a swarm.

Should this hive have a screened bottom or would the bees...

    Re: Source for Acetic Acid

Not sure how strong of a solution you need to use, but distilled vinegar is 5% acetic acid, pure and simple.

    Africanized Bee Question

Is an Africanized bee aggressive when it is out foraging or are they mostly aggressive when defending their hives?

Re: Encouraging Bees to Take Up Residence

    Here are two photos:

The first shows the sculpture when the bees were living in it. If you look very carefully you can see a few of them on the left side where they were entering.

Re: Encouraging Bees to Take Up Residence

Your advice is good, but there are things that prevent me from doing it now. If I could upload photos you could see how the last hive was and how easily accessable it was.

    I am only trying to...

Re: Encouraging Bees to Take Up Residence

It would be an intermediate home. We aren't ready to set up any hives and they are back and hanging around the sculpture. I could move them out later.

I made a typo regarding the lemonoil, I...

I want to get them to move into the sculpture again. Should I just put a few drops of the Lemon Oil inside the opening?

Encouraging Bees to Take Up Residence

A few months back we had a hive living in a sculpture outside our home and had a local beekeeper come and remove them. The ones we had were quite docile and gave us a new outlook on bees.

    Re: Fancy Garden Hive

Very nice, I would love to see one assembled and perhaps polyurethaned. With an A frame copper roof, too. Definitely would be a show piece in the garden.

Re: Hive Location - Near Fence

    Hive Location - Near Fence

I understand that it is recommended (in backyard situations) to place a hive near a fence to force the bees to fly high and not in the direction of passing pedestrians.

    Does this mean that one...

    Fascinated by Bees

Just joined the forum. Don't know if I will actually keep bees, but have an interesting story. I am a hobbyist potter and made a few large archetectural sculptures for our yard here in Florida.
