Re: Heard a taLL tail. Is it true?

It's the 2 year average mark..... I see a deep super all year if I'm lucky sunflowers are planted nearby and need at least a double deep broodnest to pull that off. Obviously urban hives do better,...

Re: Honeybee Genetics and Breeding Bees

Spermatogenesis is an interesting topic unto itself, but I wouldn't put much stock into it. That being said, you will find certain combinations of drone mothers and queen mothers probably out...

Re: Ontario restricts use of neonicotinoids

Spent 40k+ weeding 25 acres with a crew this year.... that's the smart way to do it apparently.... Just go scout your field, it'll be fine, don't worry about it..... You can't fix blind optimism...

Re: The other denizens of a TBH...

I bet you find most of these critters on top of the topbars where the bees can't patrol, it's the same in a lang if you use an innercover.

    Re: Upset/Disappointed/Confused/etc.

Square, sometimes it's not so much the collapse, but how far can they recover from it. This model of survival just doesn't fit well with certain goals. Some hives will collapse down and shut the...

Re: Bees criteria to choose queen larvae

I tend to do what Crofter mentions as well, I'll come back and check for cells 4-5 days after a split and cull any capped ones sinc there are usually newer cells being made from eggs that have...

Re: Honeybee Genetics and Breeding Bees

Not quite right, same drone father doesn't mean identical, have to remember recombination during meiosis when the queen is producing eggs

Re: Can a noob take care of 60 hives?

I was going to chime in, do you have the TIME to take care of 60 hives. Beekeeping is fairly straight forward hive to hive.... but it becomes more of a logistics issue as your numbers increase.

    Ace,

He's talking about now, when the commercial hives start coming in to overwinter.
  21. Re: Positive strategies for the migratory vs. hobby conflict

what can you do other than keep your hobby yards away from areas where commercials dump 15k hives. I've had hives next to fields where the commercial guy comes in for the pollination and yes, it...
