I have watched my observation hive for two years and have never seen water in the cells.

I have fed sugar water with the black mold several times - have not seen any bad results. The bees seem to like it fine.

I have the same problem. My solution - put the queen and her bees into my observation hive which will stay in my front porch all winter. I just did this two days ago. They will be fed sugar water...
I enjoy walking around my hives when they "buzz" like that. This evening ,as I walked within 15 feet of any hive, the smell of necter drying was strong. My wife and I stood in the front yard this...
I also open fed, about 250 feet from my hives. I used a 5 gallon bucket from Orschelns Farm and Home. Not all plastic buckets will work. They have to be made with a "honeycomb" under the lid that...

We extracted 8 frames of honey yesterday. So far this year, I have not even seen one shb.
A truck just delivered our new extractor from Mann Lake. It holds 9 full frames or 18 mediums. Yes, the electric is a little expensive- but well worth it. We have used an older 4 frame hand crank...
I sometimes use a sugar spray for minor inspections. Never in cold weather. If I need to do a deep inspection, smoke is the best tool.
Actually, smoke is allows the best tool.
I live north of Columbia, Missouri - the flow here is still going on. Not sure what flowers the bees are working ; I have lots of white clover in full bloom as well as yellow and white sweet...
You installed a vsh queen- I assume she was painted. Do you still see her?
We use a stainless steel kitchen strainer from Walmart. It is about the same hole size as window screen. Works great on 5 gallon bucket.
Ask at your bee club. Someone will have one that you can use.
I have a piece of 1/2 inch plywood cut to just fit inside a box (super or hive body). They always get glued and nailed square.
I wear the nitrile gloves. "Nitrile gloves get HOT" -but their cool
