Re: What is your favorite hive configuration?

I just pulled seven full supers (8 frame) off three hives full of eucalyptus honey. In SF we had a late euc bloom. Very easy to handle up and down stairs and hills. I'm an urban honey commando. The...

Re: selling honey to small stores

I have a one case minimum, 24 pounds. I mostly sell to hipster supermarkets and small stores. I even have two ladies handbag stores I sell to. Go figure! I've received orders up to 4 cases around...
  4. Re: Quick and East Bee Watering Feature - Any Suggestions?

What? So you're a cheap skate landscaper and you also have a problem with horse women or as you say, "horsey ladies?" You're a sexist man pig!
  5. Re: Quick and East Bee Watering Feature - Any Suggestions?

You're a Landscaper aren't you? In return for allowing their horses to get the piss stung out of them, you should put a nice water feature in for them. You could do it at cost which would be pretty...

Re: Hinged lid on swarm trap

    Cleo,

I fill the trap with old brood frames and I usually get to my traps before they start comb on the top of the frames. I did have one time where I just used a long serrated knife and cut...

Re: Hinged lid on swarm trap

    Cleo,

I'm going to try your one side method. I'm purging my old comb stock as its getting too bad to even put it swarm traps. Like I said earlier, I tend to miss one or two and then when I finally...

Re: Hinged lid on swarm trap

    Cleo,

Why do you place your frames to one side of your trap? Why not in the middle?

Re: Hinged lid on swarm trap

Let's not split hairs here Ollie. 40 or 100 traps, 50 or 60 caught, it's all good.

Re: Hinged lid on swarm trap

    River,

The city of SF has 100's of managed colonies in various neighborhoods and feral hives in Golden Gate Park where one of my rooftop yards are. I have a distinct advantage compared to most...

Re: Hinged lid on swarm trap

    Tom,

My entrance is 1 1/2". I average around 12 to 15 captures per season in swarm traps. I place 6 to 8 traps out at a time. I should place more but I forget where I put them.

    River,

    I used...

    Re: Treatment free strategy

I think it would help if you used common beekeeping terms instead of "wild caught". Who talks like that? Maybe a phrase like "bees from traps" or "swarm trap bees". Let's try to use a little more...

    Re: Treatment free strategy

You can't possiby know if the swarms you catch are "Wild" or not. There are so many managed hives where you are I would bet that over 90% are from hobbyist hives that got their bees from Califonia...

Re: Hinged lid on swarm trap

    Tom,

They're just regular utility hinges I picked up at Home Depot. They work well.

Re: Hinged lid on swarm trap

You just can't close up then throw your traps in the back of your little sissy pick-up Ollie.
    Anyway, my hinges work great.

  18. Re: Dumbest thing you ever bought for beekeeping ?

Here's another one. A decapping roller. What a joke. It gets clogged up after about 3 frames in.

  19. Re: Dumbest thing you ever bought for beekeeping ?

Oh wow, are you really going to go there? When Mr. "Oh, look at me, I use jumbo hives" have recently gone to eight frame boxes? You just hate it when I'm right!
  20. Re: Dumbest thing you ever bought for beekeeping ?

10 frame boxes. Cut all of them down to eight frame. Much better.
  21. Re: Dumbest thing you ever bought for beekeeping ?

Plastic queen excluders. That's what I get for being cheap.

Re: what is a 10 frame slotted rack for

Just so you all know, Ollie has more money than you can ever imagine. I've been to his mansion with his goofy Plex Pagoda hive in his front yard. I have seen his landscape operation. He would have...

Stunning video. I'm more surprised that you actually have a colony that's still alive over winter than I am of their activity.:applause:
