Re: Swarm today, now I'm more confused

No, they were too high up.

They did move into the trap, so the swarm is caught. I only had 5-6 frames in there, tomorrow I'll add the others to the 10 frame box and possibly another box. It...

Swarm today, now I'm more confused

A swarm came from one of my hives at 10:30 this morning. It looked too large for a nuc, so I raced off and got another hive body, some swarm lure, etc.

Went through my hives and here is what I...

    Re: Swarms 14,15,16,17

    Colfax, CA

Swarm issued from my hive this morning. I'm trying to catch it now with a baited nuc box.

Off to the supply store for more equipment, then a full hive check on both hives to see...

    Re: Laying pattern

How long ago did you install the hive? Is it possible that the center bees hatched out already?

    Re: Drones in the Afternoon

It's the time of day they go looking for virgin queens to mate with.

If it just looks like pencil erasers, those are capped drones.

    Re: Saw a queen cell...

Queen cups are made just in case. It's a cup until larvae is in it, then it's a queen cell. Some hives choose to supersede the queen if she's not up to snuff. Drone cells can be made to look...

    Re: First REAL hive inspection

Doesn't matter, either is fine. You don't disturb them much by adding another deep.

Also, don't assume they will always be easy to work with. In a dearth they can be quite nasty. When the...

Re: What to do with supers after extraction?

3 mediums? Clearly I'm doing something wrong. I hope to be that lucky, but probably not.

    Re: Beekeeping and dementia

My grandmother is 90 and has dementia and Parkinson's disease. Physically she's fine, but mentally she's totally out of it. She's existing, but not living. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

    Her...
  13. Re: Strange hive inspection, need advise please

I do reverse boxes in early spring, but I wasn't sure if it could be done this late. We are on our full blackberry flow right now.
  14. Re: Strange hive inspection, need advise please

Thanks for your advise. I've been wanting to add an upper entrance. I just need my husband to router a hole in one side of my inner cover. Do they store pollen in the super when you have an upper...

  16. Strange hive inspection, need advise please

On 5/9, I added a QE and a honey super to my large hive. The hive is 2 deeps and a shallow super above a QE. The population was high and the flow is incredibly strong right now, so I was concerned...

Re: What happened to the queen

You could have accidentally squished her on an inspection.

Re: Queen sighting but didn't see eggs/larva

Third picture has open larvae. The eggs are very, very, very hard to spot on fresh comb. It helps to tilt the frame to the sunlight to see them better. My 2nd hive has black foundation, and they...

    Re: Honey--I love my Bees!

Up the hill from you. Your honey production is promising for me! We are still in the middle of the blackberry bloom, but I'm hoping it will be a great honey year!

    I originally got bees for...

    Re: First hive worries

My guess is they are orienting to their new home. Large orientation flights can look surprising.

Absconding is also possible, are there any bees left in the hive?
