Re: Making Splits with a purchased queens

if the bees need a queen and have the right age larva, they will make a queen anyway. You don't have mash any comb.

    Re: 'comando' screened bottom board

The only negative to that approach is that you have to leave that box on the bottom. Sometimes it's nice to be able to rotate them.

Re: Making Splits with a purchased queens

I don't bother with waiting a day. My nucs accept new queens just fine when installing them as soon as the split is made. In fact, it helps with drifting if you already have a queen in the box.

Yes, especially since it doubles as a top vent. I think that is more important.

    Re: French frame buidling jig

paste wax will keep glue from sticking to your jig. I use old fashioned Johnson's paste wax in the yellow can.

It's actually closer to the slat style of jig that I use in that it requires no springs.

    Re: Just brush bees

    Depends on the bees :)

And I'll say again in case anyone missed it, you won't clear supers that have brood by any method I know of. If you want that honey, be prepared to work frame by frame.

I second that. I even know a grad student that kept bees on a dorm roof at Harvard when my daughter was there.

Re: I won a NUC !!! But it won't fit?

It's so easy. Stack two mediums up. Put the deep frames in the center extending down into the second medium, with medium frames on each side in both boxes. As they build out onto the medium...

    Re: Just brush bees

I've tried most techniques including blowing and brushing. When I pull honey in July, it is robbing season and not much blooming, so the bees are already pissed. They will follow the supers trying...

Re: Linseed Oil as hive dip/preservative?

Boiled linseed oil in todays world isn't boiled, it has heavy metals added as driers. I don't want it inside my hives. Outside it won't last long by itself. Raw linseed oil takes forever to dry,...

Thanks Michael. As I have for the last 15 years, I'll wait for your reports on how best to manage them. As most of my producer hives are 50 miles away, right now I don't see how to incorporate them.
