Re: bad cover design on my part.

Mine don't but they are a wee little hive at the moment and foundationless so they are preoccupied elsewhere. we'll see once they hopefully get bigger this year. I may have to make a thinner one. ...

Re: bad cover design on my part.

Which were mine? On my lang I have a 3/4" x 3/4" shim that goes all the way around the edge even with the hive walls. more of a spacer than an inner cover. It also serves as my top entrance on...

Re: bad cover design on my part.

Re: bad cover design on my part.

you do smash some bees between the top bars when you fit them back together but you dont' smash any on top because most are stuck below the bars. a few per...

Re: bad cover design on my part.

Normal top bars are different because they completely block the top and all the bees stay underneath. yours have space to get above so they will all come up and over the second you take off the...

Re: bad cover design on my part.

Didn't catch that the first time.. good eyes.

GWW, you need a space between the top of the frames and the cover of whatever you choose. For the bees to be over the frames and so you don't smash...

Re: bad cover design on my part.

ya that is the tricky part of making a long lang. you need to split up the covers to keep them from warping and making gaps.

a few solutions with a quick search. one from Beesource - MattDavey...

Re: Why isn't she being attacked??

Also looks like she is slightly off to the side out of the main path. And as some of the comments say she gets tagged a few times. Not sure why she's giving them like .25oz of store honey but...

    Re: upper entrance?

Yep. I have a 3/4" shim around the top with a small top entrance to go along with the normal bottom entrance. Shim is nice because you can move the entrance up when you add boxes so there is no...

Re: Whiten up the comb--how to?

Anodizing makes for a nice weatherproof finish. maybe throw a bit of metal flake in for some sparkle.

I think he means if there is any neg. effect of using his bleached frames... which i'm not sure is a good idea. just a waste of time all around.

Re: Dead out came back to life once it warmed up

Not dead until Warm and dead is a pretty well known phrase around here. you don't want your bees running around and flying when it is too cold. just leave them closed in the hive until it warms up..
  21. Re: I just remembered why I switched to top bar hives!

Ya.. but the negatives that people are bringing up have a lot to do with being inefficient on a larger scale. for 1-2 hives it doesn't matter.

ie I'm not selling honey.. i'm eating it. I...
