    Re: Newbee in central VA

Welcome & goood luck with your bees!
  2. Re: Hello from Alaska, I'm interested in the top bar hive....

I have and love my TBHs, but I have no experience with your climate. However, I do know of TBH beeks in places with severe weather like Sweden, Michigan, Maine, and Canada who have successfully kept...
  3. Re: First Spring Inspection -- Splitting next Weekend

Florida is in AHB territory, which is probably why it's illegal to have a queenless hive. My guess is that they don't want queens open-mating and introducing AHB genetics. I'm not saying I agree or...
  4. Re: Hello again from very cold connecticut

Welcome back. You're not too far from me, and you're right -- It is very cold this winter. Hope your hives are doing well!

    Re: Lubbock Texas

Welcome! It's great that you plan to get your kids involved. Even though my kids don't seem to be able to keep their bee jackets on for more than 5 minutes in the summer, they still enjoy seeing the...

  7. Re: Hello, I'm a newbie beekeeper starting this spring in southeastern Connecticut

BTW, if you're on FB, Christy Hemenway started a FB group for Connecticut Top Bar Hives. It's a good place for us TBH beeks who are near each other to compare notes.

    Re: Hey Ya'll

Welcome! That's kind of amazing that you're getting packages in March. I guess it must be a lot warmer down there.
  9. Re: Hello, just joined, from Middlefield, Connecticut

Welcome from the Farmington Valley! Nice to have another Nutmegger on here.
  10. Re: Hello, I'm a newbie beekeeper starting this spring in southeastern Connecticut

Hi, Bryan! Welcome to BeeSource! I'm going into my third year with topbar hives in Hartford county, CT.

Regarding the bottom of the hive, I don't think the bees care. They'll build in it no...
  11. Re: LOL...somebody made top bar hives in video game

I've seen lots of games with beehives, but never TBHs. LOVE it!

    Re: Hi, from South Carolina

Welcome! I have 3 TBHs and 3 TBH nucs. I LOVE them! They're easy to build and easy to manage. Even my 12-year-old can open them up and inspect them.

I hope you have a great time with yours. Good...

Re: Should a new beek start with langs?

I don't think either TBHs or Langs are better than the other. They are both have different pros and cons, so I would weigh which factors are most important to you, and then pick a hive based on that....

Re: It Looks Like Bees Love Rosemary!

Yes, they do love rosemary! My husband just brought back an organic monofloral rosemary honey from Portugal recently. Very interesting flavor.

Re: New to Forum from NE Indiana

Welcome, Mtforge! What a bummer about your bees. I'm considering this my first winter with KTBHs (last year, a bear got my bees in Nov, so I don't think that counts), and I'm curious about what...

Re: Newbee in Marin County, CA

I started last year and lost my first hive, too. It was such a bummer, but I started over again this year, and I'm so glad I did.

I hope your loss will not deter you and that you'll have better...

    Re: Accidental Bee Keeper

Welcome to BeeSource. Sounds like you're definitely a beekeeper. There is an upside to getting sucked in, though. As an herbalist, you'll appreciate the medicinal qualities of raw honey, which has...

Re: A nod to the ancestors

    Re: Questions re: dwindling hive

I split my bees in July, and I've never seen mites either. I'm sure they're in there, but I simply haven't seen them. I know what they look like, and I actively looked for them... they're just not...
