I use nitrile gloves also, but I always use baby powder on them. The bees seem to really like the smell of the powder. I haven't been stung...yet. I really don't mind if If they elect not to sting me.

OK, first the disclaimer; I haven't used these yet, but a fellow beek has them and really likes them. I plan to order a few because they really look like a great feeder. The price looks good too,...
Not so much as a real plan, but my idea is to feed as long as the bees are taking it. These are first year hives, and I really want them to survive the coming winter.
Thanks for the comment; guess I'll just put it on the end.
Trying to combat the cold, wet, spring and early summer here in the PNW (Pacific North Wet) I've decided to use frame feeders. My question is: are frame feeders always placed clea=r to the side of...
I bought a Jawadis suit that was too small. I went ahead and used it five or six times. Because of the small size I broke the zipper (plastic) and ripped out the crotch while squatting down with a...
Thanks, I'll probably leave the screens on, and give them time to figure it out unless other beeks come up with good reasons for removing them.

OK, I had a work crew out replacing the buried telephone cables on my property (2 1/2 day job). My house and buildings are so old I can't get insurance, so I decided to put the bees "in lock-down" by...
And a tip of the hat to Boris and Natasha; that made my morning..:applause:
It'll be interesting to see where things go for me. I placed the hives (two Carolinians) where I could see them from the house, and they'd be easy to work. If it turns into a problem for people...
I did my first install of two packages yesterday. I wore the full suit, except I used nitrite gloves instead of leather. Everything went well, with no stings. I set a chair about twenty feet from the...
I'm a newbee as well, but there are a zillion or so videos on www.youtube.com. After watching a bunch of the videos and reading various books, plus th forum I'm anxious to get going.
Best of luck to...
Good Job on the shopping. For that price you must not have paid as mch for shipping. I did include the cost of a class in my expenditure, and both hives were complete, assembeled, and painted.

As an addendum;
I'm posting to show that I really do listen to people with more experiance.
I just ordered a second completee hive, and a second super for my first hive. Now all I need is a...
I ordered a beginners kit with hive, gloves, veil, smoker, and some other stuff from Dadant. I was surprised by the over $100.00 shipping charge, but realize that's just how things are nowadays. I...
Wow, I didn't expect the number of replies I received on this thread. Thanks to everyone who took the time to voice their opinion. From the number of replies in favor of two or more hives; I guess...
How Many Hives Should A New Beekeeper Start With?
I ask because I have one hive purchased, and time enough to get a second here before bees are ordered, should that be a wise decision.
My initial...
Thaks for the offer; I'll keep it in mind.
Ken
Thanks for the welcome.
I checked out your website ( americasbeekeeper.com) and was pleased to find it in Spanish as well as English language. I'm working on being bilingual, so I can use it for...
Thanks for the welcome. As Island Apiaries pointed out; we do have a group "Whidbey Beekeepers Association AKA Whidbees" of which I am a member. This is a group of friendly, knowledgeablel people,...
Thanks Dave, I'm looking forward to class; especially the hands on portion.
Ken.
Thanks for the welcome; I used to work with a fellow on the ferries (WSF) whom we called "Quill Bill" - AKA "Roadkill Bill".
Ken
Thanks for the welcome, and yes, I know where Brinnon is. I'v been through there many times, just not since WSF started the reservation system on the Keystone/Pt. Towsand ferry run.
Ken
Thanks for the welcome Charlie.

Hi,
My name is Ken, and I have a new hive (empty) setting in an outbuilding, and am taking classes from a local beekeeper. The plan (as I remember) is to have bees coming in late March to mid...
