Re: Mixing bee races with new hives

All my bees are local mutts and are aclimated to our climate here. They do very well for themselves (stores, brooding, overwintering and requeening themselves) and for the most part are rather...

    Re: mold in hive

Make sure your hives are tipped forward to allow water to run out of the hive. Cold air doesn't bother the bees as they heat the cluster and take turns warming each other up. Keep the hives in a...

    Re: Should I be worried

Pretty typical really. It does get worse than that on a sunny day in the dead of winter. I've had a few hundred dead outside on the snow because they thought they could get out, do their "duty" and...

Re: Honey warming box air temperature

I had a custom stainless steel drip pan built to fit the inside of the supers that rests just under the bottom frames that I added since the video. I keep this well above the light bulb to ensure the...

  8. Re: Mouse guard - 1/2 square opening or 1/4 square?

I ran the 1/4" last winter with one wire removed ( a couple incehs apart) so I had two openings that were 1/4" x 1/2". Didn't work with a darn. Entrance was plugged big time with bees that were dead....

  10. Re: Michigan is going CRAZY! Possible 2015 law change about keeping bees

I'm not concerned at all with this proposed change. I need a wind break built all around my hives anyhow. lol Seriously though, laws are in place to enforce if needed. NEEDED is the key word here....

Re: What happened to my bees?

Have you checked to see if they are storing enough honey? Check the mite loads?

Re: Dead bee's on the landing

Sometimes the bees will rid the larvae if they think the larvae are damaged, infested with varroa or diseased. It's their way of keeping the hive colony alive.

Re: Dead bee's on the landing

How many bees are we talking here? Have you checked the honey stores recently? I had one robbed out without knowing and went to check on stores just to find no honey and dead bees.
  14. Re: Pros and cons on Sharing a bee yard with another beekeeper

Not a lot of wiggle room here especially with "a family friend" that wishes to keep bees there. If you object to this proposal, you may have to find greener pastures.

Re: Going all out to get easy swarms, etc.

I'm not so sure an eye screw is the way to go. Nucs have to be mounted somewhat solid I imagine so the bees won't get spooked and abscond in a wind storm.

I like to repurpose what I can, thus the pallet stands. Cost me nothing to make.

Re: What made you decide to keep bees?

Saw a documentary about there being no honey bees in China. Seems like they killed them all with years of abuse with pesticides and insecticides. Those poor people were pollinating every flower by...

    Re: Moths...Help!

Just one more reason I like the solid bottom boards. Clean off the bottom board and the bees should keep them out of the hive if it is a strong colony.

Did you happen to compare the Ford against a comparable Chevy? Last I knew the Chevy got better gas mileage and more horsepower. Nice looking truck.... the barrels, not so much. lol
