Re: When to Open the Sides of the Broodnest

I am going to give this a go on a couple of my hives this year. Sounds like fun. Matt, are you seeing increased honey production with 3 deep brood nests and a significant population of bees since you...

Re: Do you reverse hive bodies?

I did not reverse last spring, but I will this year. I had 2 swarms even after swarm control splits and attempts to open the brood nest. Thinking about a late Feb or early March reversal...

    Re: Screen Bottom Boards

I bought 3 Freeman screen bottom boards this winter and will give them a try this spring. I like Rusty's idea using aluminum foil pans for the rest of my hives...duplicating SBB's with Freeman type...

Grow from 6 hives to 8 hives. Start 3 or 4 nucs. Double honey output from last year! Do a better job on swarm control this year...!

    Re: Worst mistake of 2014.

    Hey Oldtimer,

I just reviewed my notes on the nuc combine. The laying worker colony was a new package (3 lb) installed early April. The queen was released in 4 or 5 days, and I noted a spotty egg...

    Re: Queenless roar vs fanning

It was hot yesterday here in East Tn and all of my hives had a rather loud roar…I suspect they are fanning to cool the hive…if you are concerned you might want to go in and look for eggs or...

    Re: Nervous about robbing

Yes, lots of hovering bees all around the hive, wrestling at entrance and on ground in front of entrance. Lots of bees trying to find alternative ways to get in i.e. bottom, sides, around outer...

Just an update on the queen-less hive after swarm…inspected hive today and found the new queen roaming around on one of the frames. She was due to emerge yesterday…all of the other 6 queen cells had...

Re: I've got a laying worker hive

I had the same problem with a package install this year. They did not accept the queen that came with the package and I tried a nuc combine with a laying queen and the colony killed her. So, I tried...

  18. Performed artificial swarm…swarmed anyway

Found several capped swarm cells on 2 or 3 frames in the top brood box of one of my strong hives on May 7th. Performed an artificial swarm by moving the queen and 3 frames of brood, pollen, and honey...
