    Re: Florida Newbee

Most of my hives still have lots of brood, but some don't. They threw out their drones about 10 days ago. Poor fellas. I have some brood all winter. Each hive varies. If it's queen right and...

Welcome Gail! Get ready for the fun and frustrating ride. I'm in Florida, too, but on the other coast.

Re: How Mushrooms can Save the World (Bees)

Paul Stamets is an interesting guy. A close relative of mine, an oncologist, became interested in it after colleague's very elderly patient had a spontaneous remission of her cancer (had opted for no...

    Re: Fair Price?

Yeah, it's a little light on the frame quantity. I come up with 24 frames needed. As far as the SBB, it has a mite tray to block it off. I love SBB but I live in South Florida.
  5. Re: Confused....where did this queen come from?

I guess I'll never know for sure where she came from, but I agree with Bee Whisperer, "It's a miracle" it all worked out. Or dumb luck, most likely.

mdax, I like the way you think. :)
  7. Re: Confused....where did this queen come from?

The amount of time that passed is 6 days, from last Sunday to today. It rained Tuesday through Friday. Sorry, I thought it was clear in my post. Today, I was actually looking for new emergency queen...
  8. Confused....where did this queen come from?

I had a nuc tower, 4 stacked, full of bees. That was not my plan, I just kept thinking this whimpy, tiny nuc would stop building up, but they didn't. They went gang busters after finally recovering...

Re: The best thing I've made from honey

Excuse my ignorance, but how do you dehydrate it? Confused.......
  10. Re: What essential oil blends (scent) do you like?

How much wax do you need?

My best selling soap is a combo of lemongrass, lemon, and litsea. The lemongrass smells wonderful as we all know, and the litsea adds a buttery lemon smell as well as an...

Re: The best thing I've made from honey

Add some cayenne powder to it. Yum. I keep some in my fridg for when I'm not feeling quite right. I also put a crushed clove of garlic in mine, too, for added antiseptic punch. Longer it sits, the...

    Re: Please Stop...

Well said. As my flight instructor used to say, "You don't know what you don't know," or as to an old timer's expert experience, "He's forgotten more than I will ever know." And, I must say, he is a...

Ah, yup. OK, now that you bee-otched slapped the newbies, hope you feel better. If beeks have done their due diligence, as JTGaraas stated, they would know they have to pick and choose advise,...

Re: What's wrong with this bee?

Where did you find it? Was if alive or dead? I had some bees with shredded wings from big ants clipping them off and trying to take over colony. The girls drove them off but there were wingless...
  19. Re: Why do these beeswax pellets smell bad?

I find that rendered fresh honeycomb smells good and is a beautiful creamy color while old comb, especially brood comb smells not so good and is shades of amber in color. The stuff (slum gum?) left...

Re: A down side to beekeeping.

Oh my that's bad. We hardly ever get bee poop. Our bees' flight path is up and away from cars. They have to fly over other neighbors backyards before they go over driveways. They are surrounded by...
  21. Re: Setting out drained crushed comb for bees to clean up

Wow, my girls go to bed early. Ya'lls bees must be really hungry.
  22. Re: This is as close to Robbing as I want to get.

Poll: Re: City bees vs. Country bees

My hives are in three different locations, all backyards. Two locations did not see a dearth this summer at all. The third, I had hungry bees in July but they built up like crazy in August and have...
  25. Re: Setting out drained crushed comb for bees to clean up

I do this all the time, well away from the hives (side yard opposite of where hives are). I rarely have any fighting/dead bees. Made the mistake of putting it in the backyard once. Learned quickly it...
