  1. Re: Inspiration to keep going

Best line to come out of this dog chase tail discussion. Always saw you as a glass half full kind of guy.:D
  2. Re: U.S./Canadian honeybee open border issues

    >>Fumigillan? $3.50 possibly treating fall and spring.

Still would require a spring treatment with packages.

  3. Re: Inspiration to keep going

I don't mind things the way they are. Law of unintended consequences could be painful. Many unknowns and who knows how things would end up. Operations could expand very quickly with cheap packages.

  4. Re: Inspiration to keep going

My take on the economics of wintered vs package. It cost me about $45 per hive to winter and maintain my numbers. Historically I've had a 10% surplus, so at $100 a package (which is probably the...
  5. Re: Inspiration to keep going

Haraga, you misunderstood my position. I am happy with the way things are as well.

I'm concerned that opening the border may well be a case of "the medicine being worse than the disease."

    I...
  6. Re: Inspiration to keep going

Ian, what do you think the price for a US package would be if the border opened to packages, in $CND, given the increased demand and the protocols that I suspect that would need to be followed. As...

    Re: Indoor Wintering Mistake

Wow at 81F you are very fortunate to not have had a total melt down.

I'm very surprised you reached temperatures that high with a theoretical 4 min air exchange. Bees should not be producing that...

    Re: Genetics and feed.

I think it's probably a combination of genetic and environmental. Some races are more likely to stay broodless during winter. I assume there is variation within a race that could be used to breed for...

    Re: Syrup in cold temps

Good to know.i have never used a frame filler for packages. I use it the odd time for splits with very uneven amounts of feed.

    Re: Syrup in cold temps

I misread the amount of honey the op had. Looks like a lot so yes I agree scraping so of the middle frames should be adequate. Warm weather can't be that far away.

Hey thanks Ian. Saw your email after my post. Sent you an email reply. Will check into it tomorrow. Thanks again.

    Re: Syrup in cold temps

Good advice beepro. Get the warm feed in the frame feeder as close to the cluster as possible, not on the outside edge. If you have access to a frame filler that would be ideal.

    Re: Notice to Ian

14 C in sioux falls this morning and better in Florida tonight. Feels lambish to me.:) Ian I felt a little guilty not heading to cooks and Beal for a pick up instead of heading for Florida.

    Re: Genetics and feed.

Jodie I'm always looking for the lazy easy out. If I can get equal results with less work that's the route I will take.

I would be interested in your results Chip. I have also been wondering about MAQS on singles. Mite away 2 was tough on singles.
  18. Re: Leaving off Fumagillin made no difference in survival rate - Thank Jim Lyon.

Can't say I've seen any difference in the years I've used Fumagillin and the years I haven't. At one point I treated prophylactically in fall and spring until some of my bees were tested for nosema...
  19. Re: 2013 - 14 Winter losses -Scientific American

I'm with Ian on this one. I don't think bees need empty comb to winter well. I pack them full of syrup in September and next feeding is April. The ones that aren't packed full end up with their heads...

I've never paid too much attention to the low RH - probably should. High RH I know is really bad. 40% is a good target IMO.
