    Re: swarm left queen behind

You could start a nuc and if your original hive becomes (or is) queenless, you can add her back to the original hive like a packaged queen.

    Re: Why is this happening?

What do you have in the trap?
  3. Re: Will a new queen in a cage that died work for making a swarm lure?

I just dip one end of a Q tip into the solution and the other in LGO and staple it to the underside of the telescopic cover above the entrance.
It helps to have old drawn comb in the hive to lure...
  4. Re: Lost three hives this winter need swarms but when to put out traps

Timing and location is key I believe. This one trap in particular was set just west of an old, I mean OLD woods. I picked up several swarms in that area last year.
  5. Re: How long does it take package bees to start drawing comb and is my queen dead?

You should have seen them pull comb by now. I had one pull a dollar bill sized comb in 24 hours before. Is a good flow one there? Are you seeing alot of activity outside the hive? Bees coming in...

    Re: Hive Tilt

All you need to provide is a little forward tilt and most importantly, ventillation.... and plenty of it.

Re: Ever have a hive turn aggressive.....

Peeking in on them everyday for 2 weeks MAY have contributed to their attitude problem. Can you imagine something (or someone) bugging you every day for two weeks? lol

A little space will do you...

    Re: No Gloves- No Veil......WHAT?

Conditions have to be right in order to go unprotected. I used to quickly inspect the hives with no pretective equipment until one of my hives became nasty. Why they became that way, I have no idea....
  9. Re: Will a new queen in a cage that died work for making a swarm lure?

    any time.
  10. Re: Will a new queen in a cage that died work for making a swarm lure?

I'd put them in 1/4 cup or so. They will last a long time and will serve you well.
  11. Re: Lost three hives this winter need swarms but when to put out traps

I set mine out just over a week ago. Had one move in yesterday.

Re: First swarm. a little help please.

For the next swarm, I would suggest that you hive them right into their permanent home and forgo the box if you can. Too much shuffling them around and they may leave.
  13. Re: Will a new queen in a cage that died work for making a swarm lure?

Those queens will work fine. Just add them to some rubbing alcohol and your good to go. It should be at full strength in a couple of days.

Re: Learn something new every day.

Yeah, I think we all make that mistake.... ONCE!
  15. Re: Observed bees hauling out dead and flying far away

I'm guessing that it a housekeeping/saftey issue. I can only imagine that if the dead bees were all piled up just in front of the entrance, it would gather all sorts of disease and pests to include...
  16. Re: Coloring and putting symbols on Entrances

Is drifting that much of an issue in the first place? Although the colors and patterns are nice for US to ponder. lol

Re: Optimal size for swarm traps?

Double 5 frame medium nuc is what I run. Had one move in just yesterday. Homowner said it was the size of a volleyball.

Re: First swarm. a little help please.

I take it there is no drawn comb in the trap? Any LGO or queen juice?
    They appear to be staging.
You never know though, the queen could just slip inside for a moment, then... it's on.
  19. Re: How to get a hive out of a wall without dismantling it

The problem with a trap out is that all the larvae, nectar, honey, and dying bees that are left in the structure will start to rot and smell like the dickens in a short amount of time.
    Not to...

Re: Packaged Bees - Smoke or not to Smoke

No smoke until they get well established. No sense in giving them another reason to bug out.

    Re: smoker skills

I also like to prime the smoker with newspaper and then fuel up with old blue jeans. 100% cotton, will not soot up your smoker and produces cool white smoke for hours.

Re: Upper entrance for bait hive?

I would just take a regular complete hive, ratchet strap it together and place it upwind from the feral hive 100-200' away. Bait with LGO and queen juice.
Swarm arrives, let them take up residence...

Re: Using a Steinkraus-Morse Swarm Catcher

Nice catcher. I made one of these (posted pics here) months before this video was made by another beekeeper. Works great and is quite durable.

  25. Re: using old equipment with termites in the boxes

Also termites have to return to soil every 24 hrs to rehydrate. If they cannot get to the soil, they perish.
