Re: Capped brood problems! Something's not right!

Is the observation hive warm enough? Does the glass feel cold? I made the sad mistake of not keeping the bees warm enough and that happened to me. Now, I keep a cover over my OB hive to keep warmth...
  2. Re: Please comment on this SBB with oil pan design

Looks very nice. I have used vegetable oil and it was messy. Then, I read somewhere that powdered garden lime would work just as well. So, I tried using a thin layer of lime in my trays and it...

Re: Has anyone tried Sainfoin in the east?

I tried it. My soil is acidic, so I spread lots of lime before planting. We had an extremely dry summer. It only grew 4" - 6" the whole summer. The following spring, none of it came up. I live in...

I was there recently buying something else and I saw the woodenware. Looked nice. Looked like everything fit together well.
  8. Re: Is it okay to find dripped honey on the bottom board?

In the past, I have seen patches of leaking honey on some of my trays, also. Never found out what caused it. However, when spring came, everything looked good in the hive.
  9. Re: Oil trays for DIY screened bottom board/traps

I got snack trays off of eBay. If you put in the size you want, you should get a nice list. (I least I did for 8 frame size.) I tried using oil and it was messy. I read about someone using powdered...

I bought one 3 or 4 years, also. I was very pleased with how quickly he sent her. Arrived the next day. She did great.
  11. Re: How long should an escape board be left on if SHB are in the area? On or off the

I remove the honey super and put it on an escape board next to the hive. I put a cover or another escape board on top of the honey super. If I use another escape board, I like to put something on top...

    Re: Planting Goldenrod

I spread Goldenrod seed around. I do not know the names of the different types of goldenrod, so I observe which plants honey bees work, and spread the seed of those plants. My bees are not interested...

    Re: Beetles in Observation Hive

I put a beetle jail trap in my observation hive. Instead of using vegetable oil, I use powdered garden lime. I had read that dead beetles in vegetable oil will stink after awhile, whereas they do not...
  14. Re: Basic beginner bee behavior - rain and food queries

What would account for the frenzy at one hive but the peace at the other please?

Is it really a frenzy or is it a cluster of bees hanging down? If it is a calm cluster hanging down, you probably...

Re: 20 year old frames with white specs

I have seen discussions about this before, where it was referred to as wax bloom. I have seen it on my foundation, also. If it is wax bloom, it is safe to use.

    Re: Larva outside cells

Once I had a weak hive. Brood got chilled and died. Dead brood bloated and were hanging out of and falling out of cells. Does the larva look dead to you? If moving, I agree with Tenbears.

Re: Carpenter ants under top cover

Recently, I had a similar problem with carpenter ants. I killed them manually with a wet rag. I would check a couple of times a day and kill the few I saw. By the 4th day, they were gone. Good luck.
