  2. Re: when does swarm season typically start in E Central IL

I have few drones but quite a bit of capped drone drood in my hives so I would say it will start in 2-3 weeks.

Re: Michael Palmer "Sustainable Apiary" Video

I HATE vimio, 1/2 the time I can't get stuff to play, the other 1/2 they do. I don't think I'm doing anythig different either.

    Re: Can I split?

You could do it without finding the queen. A better way imo is to find the queen. Take her, 2 frames of cap brood and all the bees on those frames and build a nuc. AKA a cutdown split...

    Re: new packaages and nucs

IMO give the honey frames to the packages and set them each in 1 box until they are using 6 frames. The nucs should should come with at least a frame of honey and be ready for a second box when you...

    Re: Leftover Honey on hive?

If you want to extract it you can. No reason not to. If you want to save it for splits that fine too. Leaving it on hive for the winter would not have hurt the honey any other than you might have to...

    Re: Queen catcher clips

I'm just glad you didn't collect any money up front. Not that I'm worried about you, I just don't want to read posts from 1000 people about how you are ripping us off even though less than 100 are...

    Re: entrance location

Discovered this the hard way. Lost a nuc this winter that ate itself into one corner and starved. Plenty of honey left in hive but it was 3 frames away:(

    Re: the early flow.... :)

We hit 60 here yeserday and all hives were bringing in a ton of pollen. I wanted to open them all so bad but, won't see 50 again for at least 10 days so I just let them gather while they could.

Re: Entrance Guards to avoid swarming?

Maybe I'm reading the OP wrong but, I think he talking about keeping his hive from swarming not keeping a freshly hived swarm in. I can see a use for it the way you are talking about Mr.Beeman.

Re: Entrance Guards to avoid swarming?

I would think that if it would keep a slimed down queen that is ready to swarm in then it would also keep the drones in. Just does not seem like a good idea to me.
  18. Re: Are you ready for the Odfrank overwintering challenge?

18 of 23 made it for 78%. Not too bad with all the very weak and light nucs I made up too late in the year.
