    Re: Just Smokin'

I have an abundance of used cardboard. I just cut a strip of cardboard about 2 ft long across the veins and the width of my smoker insert. Then I roll i up tight, light one end, get it flaming...

    Newbie Sanity Check

Okay, so we went out to the hives this past Saturday after leaving them alone for three weeks. We had added the 2nd deep box to both hives and were anxious to see how much work had been accomplished...
  3. Re: I think I started a robbing frenzy last evening:(

I am a newbie! That said, I would think temporarily adding feeders to the other hives would alleviate the robbing as the other bees would not be so aggressive with plenty of food in their own homes....

I am a newbie for sure, but what you wrote (above) sounds backward to me. Did you mean for it to be the other way around? If not, please explain further as I do not understand. ...

Wife and I checked our 2 hives yesterday. We added a 2nd deep box to our strong hive 2 weeks ago. Yesterday, our weak hive showed signs of a massive recovery....brood on all frames capped and a...

    A couple of Newbie questions

Been reading and studying (I'm not a very good student when it comes to reading) but have a few of questions today.

    1) My inner cover has a notch on the rim and a round hole in the center of...

Two new hives as of package installation May 2, 2014. Lost queen early on in one hive. It reared new queen. Inspected last week and different stages of larva and capped brood covering about 50% of...

Re: Queen cell in our healthy (we think) hive.

That's very interesting! Thanks Tenbears! Next time we inspect, we will look over every frame to see if another queen is present! When we found the queen during this past inspection we just...

Queen cell in our healthy (we think) hive.

Checked our hives two days ago. Our east hive has its original queen that came in the package we installed May 02, 2014. There were no swarm cells but there were several "wads" of comb built below...

    Re: wild swarm, HELP!!

Okay, now Harley brings up an interesting point (please forgive me if I am out of line here). Aren't most wasp sprays just a strong solvent? If so, I would think that once the solvent evaporates,...

Re: New Queen - is this typical for our situation?

Packages installed May 02. First week of June, our east hive (the best of the two) had constructed foundation on 6 frames (frames 3 thru 8) mostly and was just beginning work in the insides of...

That's what I was thinking! I would put that debris tray/stickboard back in there pronto! Like Slow Drone said, the bees have stopped looking for the door because they think they are in the hive...

Checked on our two hives (east hive and west hive) yesterday. The west hive that had lost its queen and then hatched a new queen is working away. We pulled the frames and could not find the new...

Thanks all for your replies! Gonna wait two weeks and check on them to see if they need more room. Other hive will likely get its second story next week!

New Queen - is this typical for our situation?

Installed two packages into new hives on 05-02. Inspection thereafter once per week has indicated there is no queen in our west hive. Funny thing is, we were able to see some larvae in the brood...

Re: Newbie - hives ready for 2nd box

Oh, and I forgot to mention we have never seen the queen in one of the hives. Brood appears to have larva, but there is a huge queen cell in the middle of one of the center frames.
    I'm so confused!...
