    Re: Time for mouse guards?

I flipped mine closed about a week ago. I didn't want to take any chances this year. I found too many small nuts and seeds on the screen bottom boards last Spring. I made mouse guards that flip over...

It had just rained on them coming down hard. They were still pretty gentle considering.

    Two swarms in one tree.
One 3-4lb. and one small 1-2lb.
The bigger swarm had two queens and the smaller only had one.

Re: Central Ohio-Grove City Bee Ordinance

Some of it is rather redundant. Ohio law spells out much of this already.
You may also read the best management practices given and listed on the Ohio State Beekeepers website. One upset neighbor...
  7. Re: A question on the progression of cells -> mating nucs -> customer.

Yes. 50 queens means at least 50 mating nucs. With enough hives and equipment to supply the mating nucs.
Then you should wait until she is mated and evaluate how she is laying then put her into a...
  8. Re: Not sure if bees are preparing to swarm--I need advice!

I personally wouldn't use smoke in this case. I always carry a queen clip or two in my jacket pocket. I like to carefully move the bees around using the queen clip and catch her with the clip if I...
  9. Re: Not sure if bees are preparing to swarm--I need advice!

Perhaps the queen is now under the screened bottom board. Can you carefully look to see if she is in the cluster under there?
We have found queens under there quite a few times. The hives seem queen...

Re: Good feature of a Bushkill vac

I like how this design does this. I have sucked up chunks of drywall and plaster and found them laying in the bottom. I even accidentally picked up a chipmunks nest, because I couldn't see back into...

Re: can this be the swarm queen?

That actually looks like a drone to me but the quality of the picture isn't defined enough to say for sure.
Good luck with the new swarm. It looks like it was a decent size swarm.

Two 3 lb. after swarms in the same low apple tree.
Each had its own queen, virgins I suspect. The swarms were about 10" apart.

    Re: Cut-out Check List?

To add to the list, I also carry a queen clip and twist ties(garbage bag type) to twist tie the queen clip shut for the ride home.

  17. Re: Live Bees Thick on Bottom of Hive. What Does This Mean?

Did you happen to look under the hive? We have had it happen several times, for whatever reason, the queen was found under the hive on the underside of the screened bottom board. The bees will...

Re: cutting and sticking queen cells

You can use a rubber band over the frame as if you we're attaching a comb section while doing a cut out. We have used this many times to hold queen cages and even queen clips in place. I have also...
