    Re: Splitting hives

Probably depends upon when and how long your flow is - but if I did a two for one split in the spring, I would not expect to get honey off of them that year. I prefer to let my bees make their own...

Re: How to sell bee colonies

I sell hives made up of three mediums, a top and bottom board and established bees - in March - for $275. I figure there is about $150 or more in wooden ware and $125 in bees. Actual replacement cost...

Downside To Leaving Empty Supers On

Just robbed my bees for the second time this year. I put the extracted supers back on the hives for them to clean up. Warm weather and they have really been working. What is the downside to just...

Re: Can I Extract 50 Degree Honey

Brought the supers inside for two days - 72 degrees. Worked much better - still not like 90 degree honey when we take it in July.

Re: Can I Extract 50 Degree Honey

Well, I was halfway through loading the extractor. It actually did come out of the comb slowly - but ended up ok. What it did not do was go through a 400 micron filter. Will take awhile to clean up.

Pulled 15 supers two days ago and put in storage building. It is 50 degrees tonight. I am bringing two supers inside at a time. 20 frame maxant extractor. Will the honey flow from the frames?

Re: Moving Away From Treatment Free?

Yes - my equipment is 10 frame. We don't have tallow trees here. I do usually see a pretty decent crop of yellow and white sweet clover. I live near a large lake that has an abundance of water...

Re: Moving Away From Treatment Free?

Mine will typically build from the three mediums in the spring to five by end of June. I will put frames on them with drawn foundation. When I pull the honey in June, there will be some brood in the...

Re: Moving Away From Treatment Free?

I don't really do much to prevent swarming. I will usually make a few nucs from swarm cells when I see them if it is a hive on my "A" list. I have destroyed swarm cells. I try to make sure they have...

Re: Moving Away From Treatment Free?

I don't advertise my honey as treatment free and I am not sure most of my customers would have any idea what treatment free means. A few of the folks who have bought a hive or two from me have asked...

Re: Moving Away From Treatment Free?

I don't provide supplemental syrup. Whenever I split a hive, it is always the strongest of my hives. I have thought about selling a few more hives/nucs. This fall has been good - probably going to...

    Moving Away From Treatment Free?

I try to keep about twenty hives - split a few if the number drops or sell a few if it goes much higher. Always been treatment free. Probably lose about 10% of the hives each year - always in the...

Re: Removing Supers in the Fall

I leave them with at least three med supers - what I consider the hive. Anything above the third super - I consider mine.

    Removing Supers in the Fall

I usually extract honey the end of June thru mid July and the bees don't usually put up much additional honey the rest of the summer and fall. This year, they did - I could probably pull at least...

    Re: Bees "Bearding"

I have 20 hives and two of them have been bearding for a month. These bearding bees have not made any honey. There are a lot of bees, there is a lot of brood, they appear to be strong, healthy...

Re: What made you decide to keep bees?

I had a lot of yellow and white sweet clover growing around my place. An old man - long time bee keeper - asked me if he could set a hive on my place. I said sure. He placed it about 75 yards from...

    Re: Hive Price?

Local nucs usually go for around $100. I have not seen any hives for sale around here in the same configuration that I sell them. I only sell 5 to 10 per year. The problem I see with what I am...

    Hive Price?

I try to stay around 20 hives, but end up making some nucs and splits and catch some swarms
every year. After I replace my losses, I usually have several hives left over. I typically sell the extras...

Re: Price for a rotted out hive with bees?

3 lb packages come to you with no work involved. You are going to WORK to get these bees. I would not consider them the same price as 3 lb packages.

Re: What Should I Have Done?

Those swarm cells are not facing up - that is just how I was holding the frames. The roaming queen was in one hive - that I did not go through and the queen cells were all in another hive.

Re: What Should I Have Done?

Yes, I left the big hive at least a couple of supercedure cells - there were quite a few in there.
