  1. Re: I made making syrup a little easier on myself.

I too use a turkey fryer. Its very fast. You may want to siphon out the syrup while its hot. This is what I do and I don't spill a drop. I can fill up 6 or 8 milk jugs in a matter of minutes.

    Re: Robbing?

Get rid of the entrance feeder and install robber screens on the weak hive or both hives for that matter. They will absolutely stop the robbing.

  3. Re: Emergency Queening rearing? First timer.

I started a dirty split with a 5 frame nuc. On 3/21 I saw 2 capped queen cells. I left them alone until 4/9 and saw a big fat queen checking out some polished cells and pretty active. No eggs yet....

Re: russian bees for a new beekeeper

From my experience they always had queen cups, not queen cells.
  5. Re: Depending on your replies, I may have to quit before I start.

I have the same situation here where I work. A survivor hive that has been in the cinderblock wall for at least 7 years. I have a trap out there right now because my son wants this particular...

    Re: Swarm Caught

That's a great question. At this point I'm assuming they came from one of my hives as the swarm was 30 feet from my hives. I inspected all of my hives Saturday. The hive I suspected was a booming...

    Swarm Caught

I caught this one in my back yard. Unfortunately it came from one of my hives...but at least I got it back!

Re: russian bees for a new beekeeper

I had 2 hives of "pure" Russians. They are slightly more aggressive, did not work as hard as my Italians and prone to swarm. Now I have mutts.

    Drones

Someone told me a virgin queen will not mate with a drone from her own hive.

    Re: Nice NUC box

I prefer the Brushy Mountain Nuc. Good quality, screened bottom, IPM board and inner cover. I've bought a few...all went together well.
I'm sure you will enjoy yours.

    Re: Russian queen

Yep...they were queenless. This is an old thread ...May of 2013. Lessons learned. That was a strange Spring...but this one is even stranger. We've been getting ice, sleet or snow about once a...

    Re: Russian queen

Yep. They had made another queen and I must have missed her. And I looked really hard before introducing the new queen. $45.00 down the drain! But I will say this...since then I made a couple...

    Re: Russian queen

It almost went well. I made up a nuc with existing frames from the dwindling hive and added a frame of brood from the Italian hive. Since there wasn't a huge population of bees I scanned the frames...

    Variation to Lauri's Sugar Bricks

I am a firm believer in the sugar brick. Used them this winter and am sure placing the bricks over the cluster saved some of my hives...even though they were full of honey. Now I have taken them...

Re: How much old comb to put in a new hive?

I assume you are going to install packages? Packages can start out with no comb...just foundation, so 4 old frames would be a big help to them. Just make sure to put those old frames in the freezer...

While we're on this subject, why is the standard foundation large cell? What is the benefit? Since Varroa has been around a while, why hasn't the standard become small cell?
