Re: Colony update here in Pa

Laketrout, If I were buying rough lumber I'd plane it down only enough to get the inside smooth. I'd leave the outside rough. If the material was 4/4 (Four quarter or one inch) then I'd try to get...

Re: Colony update here in Pa

The best bet is to find someone that has a saw mill. you can get the lumber and dry it yourself and use it after that, however it also would require a shop so that may not work too well. I think...

For anyone interested I just found this site where you can download the 1910 version. I haven't skipped farther ahead to see if you can get other versions, but I'm now reading the 1910 version . . ....

    Re: Workers in Queen Cage

I have read that if the queen will be picked up and put in a hive the same day then 2 or 3 is fine. If it's going to be longer due to shipping or whatever then you want more workers in there.
  6. Re: What is the closest you have bees to your house?

last year I had 6 hives here on my property. Just under 1/2 acre. 4 hives were behind the shed 2 hives were on the driveway. My kids yard toys are stored under the shed inbetween the hives. My...

Re: Colony update here in Pa

WEll I wish this winter was as favorable for me!!! I've lost about 3/4 of my hives this year. I have 2 that look good, and one that I just checked that is VERY small. I think the pollen sub that I...

    Re: Top entrance questions

I actually found the opposite to be true. On solid bottoms the fanning was much less than it was on screened bottoms. Perhaps they were better able to keep the temp right inside vs. having to...

    Re: Top entrance questions

    1. Yes. I have solved this by drilling a hole in the solid bottom board and covering it with metal window screen. Don't use the fabric screen or the bees / SHB will eat through it. If any water...
  11. Re: Swarm Capture like you've probably never seen before! Can't do this in the city..

Taking one out at 70 yards!!! That's a pretty good shot. Was it moving? My brother may have just simply missed. He said it was "hauling" because they hunt with dogs.
  12. Re: Swarm Capture like you've probably never seen before! Can't do this in the city..

Ace I was going to say that shot is lighter than coins and therefore not an issue, but I was honestly suprised at this chart. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shot_(pellet) about 1/2 the way down...
  13. Re: Swarm Capture like you've probably never seen before! Can't do this in the city..

that's the difference!!! A rifle will go miles. A shotgun just doesn't. My 22 box says that it'll go a mile while I know my shotgun I've shot straight out and seen it hit the dirt. Different...

Re: Why not use Oxalic Acid?

JW Chesnut, where did you get that graph from? Can you give the reference. This is VERY interesting and I'd like to see the source if possible. I've been told by a guy that OA kicks the buts out...
  15. Re: Swarm Capture like you've probably never seen before! Can't do this in the city..

Hivemind. If you don't mind I'd like to know how this swarm catch ended up. Did you get the queen? How did they do in the following month or so? I see from this thread there are people that are...

    problem with squirrels?

So I was out last night (about 10:00 and there's about 15" of snow on the ground) looking at one of my hives I have at home and saw the front of the hive was cleared away a bit and there were foot...

Re: Colony update here in Pa
