    Already in the super

So I left a super on four hives over the winter. Seems these hives are coming out of winter not only putting honey in the brood chamber but already capping honey in the supers. one has almost...

    Re: Rose hive method

I have done this. Didn't know there was a special name for it though. Last year had a hive that was a deep with a medium on top coming out of winter. Didn't like that combo so early spring I put a...

    Re: For Southern Climates-Turnips

A couple of things to consider. 1. You do not want to steer your bees toward a tobacco field. Heavy pesticide for worms and chemicals for turning leaves and sucker control. Not an environment you...

    Re: Honey in brood comb

I've taken honey from honeybound hives while extracting the spring flow. Haven't seen or tasted any difference. I don't treat and don't take comb with brood in it. If it's a hive that hasn't ever...

    Re: Thrown into the Fray!

I personally would prefer the wood. Couple of screws in each board down the stud. Probably not wider than one section anyway. Much more solid. I think you'll have a better chance of them surviving...

    Re: Best size super

Shallows sound like a lot of work and extra expense so I've never used them. Been using deeps for brood and meds for honey. Like the set up. Going to try some deeps this year just to get some extra...

    Re: Another label question

After a little more digging in the right place, it seems this image is indeed not public domain or permission given for reuse. Back to the drawing board. Thanks for the replies.

    Another label question

With all the recent posts about labels I started thinking about my own. I've been either not putting a label on them since I'm basically selling to family, friends or friends of friends. Call it...
  9. Re: Two general questions for seasoned beekeepers (for fun)

    1. Best advice : Find what works for you no matter what someone else does. experiment a little.
2 Worst advice: Swarming bees won't sting you!... Trust me, they will.

Poll: Re: Do you Build or Buy your Hive Bodies?

I've started using plywood. Can get 5 deeps and a medium with a strip left for handholds out of one $25.00 sheet. Makes it about $4.00 a box. I enjoy building them. I call it my therapy time. Nobody...

Re: TF For 5 Seasons of More - Please Stand Up

I am going into my sixth season treatment free. Running eight colonies this year and have the idea I might get to twenty next year. I have been doing spring splits and letting them raise their own...

    Re: bee vacuum question

I too would recommend a bushkill style vac. You can make it as big as you need, vac them up, screen the holes and take them home. I built my own and wouldn't trade it for any other kind. Gives the...

Re: Things I learned from my first cut-out

The value of this hive right now wouldn't pay the gas one way to the cut-out. Maybe I can salvage it and be singing a different tune come spring. Without the queen this time of year, the future of...

Re: Things I learned from my first cut-out

I did that with deep frames, probably would be easier with meds. That seems to be the only thing that went as planned. I get impatient and about half way done I got tired and hot and was ready to be...

Things I learned from my first cut-out

I've cut bees from a tree and have gotten several swarms but had never done a house cut-out. This house was vacant and possibly on its way to being torn down so I said "what the heck I'll try it". I...

Re: Starting to think beekeepers are cheap. lol

I like to build stuff. I like it even more when I can build three things for the price of one store bought. I save scrap lumber, not because I'm cheap but because I hate to cut a new board or sheet...

Re: Fall flow in central North Carolina?

Going to be sometime around mid Sept. into Oct. Goldenrod mostly. The hives will have a distinct moldy smell when they start drying it down.

Re: first year, should I take some honey?

I would extract the entire top super. If you feel better about it, leave a couple. If you take it all and we have a bad fall flow you'll need to give them some sugar near winter but that's the...
  19. Re: Three 8-frame meds filling up: should I just keep adding boxes?

Stop freaking out. They do that. Mine do anyway. You can remove them from the top but without the feed on they may not draw out the new frames. Can you extract a couple from each? In the middle or...
  20. Re: Does the frame need to be completely capped before extracting

This year I extracted some that were 50% capped. Nothing came out when I gave them a good shake, so I extracted them. They were mixed with some that were 80 to 90% so that helped. No problems with...

    Re: Just Smokin'

Wood pellets or burlap seem to last the longest for me. Pellets are harder to get going without a torch, but they last a long time. Wood pellets don't need to be puffed as often to keep them going....

Re: SHB populations low this year?

Not seen any this year either. Colonies seem far less agressive too. Not complaining. Keeping the oil trays full of oil tho, just in case.

    Considering Cotton

I live in the land of Cotton. But it seems no one plants it for at least 5 miles around me. Would it be worth taking some colonies off the soybeans and put them on the cotton? Doesn't seem to be much...
  24. Re: Not seeing much discussion on harvests- how's everyone doing?

Not bad. Average is 40# per hive so far. Some were splits. Some still on the hive but may leave it in case of another long cold winter.

    Re: Minor feedback requested

Mine have completely stopped drawing comb and I am 30 miles from you. They stopped about a month ago. Going to be really hard to get them to draw any more.
