Re: How's the flow going for you?

I never get much from clover...most of the fields near me are tobacco. The flow around here consists of poplar and blackberry for the most part. As soon as they dwindle, the bees start consuming...

    Re: Dealing with Japanese Hornets

    They are European Hornets.
I've seen them hover near the entrance of my hive, grab a bee out of mid-air, take it into a nearby tree and devour it.
When I see them I take a tennis racket with me and...

Re: Not sure what bush this is

    Not Mtn. Laurel.
Laurel has a small cup-shaped bloom.
I have no idea what it is.

Re: How's the flow going for you?

    An update...
The Flow is over...hives gaining very little weight.
I weigh my hives and based on last years Flow, this harvest will be about 50% less than last year's.
    Bummer.

How's the flow going for you?

Mainly interested in Beeks form central North Carolina, but would be nice to hear from everyone.
This year we had a fraction of blackberry blooms compared to last year...not sure why. Not really...

    Re: Full nuc

Yes, we do Brian, but I haven't seen the first beetle this year...honestly, not one. I've never really had an issue with them. I've seen some in the past but never do anything about them except...

    Re: Full nuc

I'm using all drawn frames, so I guess the procedure would be the same. Just seems to me they will backfill the new brood box before filling the super.
I'll give your suggestion a try.
    Thanx

    Full nuc

I started a 5 frame deep nuc on 3/22 using 2 supercedure cells and 2 frames of bees. The new queen is a great layer and a few weeks ago placed a second deep on top. Today I decided to put this nuc...

    Re: locust and poplar bloom

Locust is in bloom, blackberries are just beginning to bloom and the poplar buds are ready to bloom...maybe a week or less away. Can't wait!
I weigh all my hives and plot their weights on a...

    What would you have done?

Last year my first swarm was April 7th. The flow is now a couple of weeks away. So I inspected all my hives for swarm preps last Sunday. One hive had 6 queen cells in random places on the...

    Mating Flight Delay

One of my hives had a couple of capped queen cells in it a little over a week ago. I decided to pull the frame and start a nuc with the queen cells. After about 5 days they had been opened. Ever...

Re: Hello from warm and sunny North Carolina

    Welcome Gary!
BTW...how sunny and warm is it today?!
    Warm spell coming Sunday.
I'm almost afraid to see how my hives are.

    Re: Tate's Apiaries Experiences

I started out a few years ago and my first 2 packages of Italians came from Tate's. They did very well, but have now crossed with my Russians. I also have a Hygienic Italian queen I bought from...
  15. Re: What flowers are supplying the polen in NC now? (northwest Piedmont)

Hard to believe they're finding anything with the cold temps and frosts we've had lately. Mine are bringing it in as well.

What temperature do you use for your crystalized honey?

    Re: New from Southern Virginia

Welcome. My best advice for a beginner is to make sure you can identify the things you should be looking for during an inspection. Eggs are the hardest things to spot...especially when your comb is...

    Chrystalized Honey

What is the maximum temperature honey should be warmed to before the beneficial bacteria starts to die off, when liquefying chrystalized honey?
  19. Re: My first 95 days as a beekeep, where did I go wrong? What's the prognosis?

Aggressive bees could also be because your hive is queenless. How is it that you inspect every 2 weeks but don't know if you have a queen? One of the most important things a newbie can learn is how...

    Re: G'day from downunder

    Welcome!

I have a friend who was woofing at the Permaculture Institute there in Australia, who I sent a pint of my good ole North Carolina honey (cost me $85 to ship!). He, in turn, shared it with...

    Re: Fall feeders

    Hey Beepro...
I drilled 1/16 dia holes around the rim above where the lid snaps into place. When you snap the lid on, it forms a narrow groove between the bucket and the lid, so the bees really...

  24. Re: Cleaning and storing supers after extracting

I've never had that problem. When I remove the super from the freezer, I give it time to thaw and dry out whatever moisture has occurred from ice. Then I seal it in the bag.
