Re: I will never buy packages again.

    Whose general rule?

How do you know if swarms are using old or new comb?

Note I used the word poorly. That doesn't mean they cannot survive on new comb just that they do better on old comb.

    Re: 8 Frame equipment

I have 8-frame boxes. I use deeps and mediums. If I were starting over knowing what I know now I would probably go with 10-frame deeps and mediums.

I also successfully overwinter 5-frame nucs.

Re: I will never buy packages again.

I have read where a retired commercial beekeeper in Canada states bees overwinter poorly on new comb. This might add another variable to the over-wintering success of packages.

    I think the two...

You mention this was your strongest hive, that instantly made me think of mites. Hopefully your post-mortem will give you some answers.

  5. Re: burning fertalizer insmoker to stunn agressive bees ?

Ammonium nitrate is a little harder to buy in quantities since the OK City bombing.

I also understand it burns pretty hot. Maybe you could put some bees to sleep and clean the creosote out of...

    Dan,

Just put some insulation over the inner cover and your problem will be fixed!

    Re: 2015 betterbee catalog

I have only ordered once from Betterbee but was very happy with the order, prices, shipping cost. Delivery time was surprisingly fast. I will do business with Betterbee again!

    Re: Top entrance

    It all depends.

I have periodic skunk problems. I switched to all upper entrances no more skunk problems.

    So, yes they are better!

    Re: screened bottom boards

I have some screen bottom boards and use upper entrances. The only times the screens would get 'clogged' with debris is with a dead hive.

I typically try to clean them out once a year. I put a...

Re: Farm Field and Round Up

2,4-D can volatilize and drift several miles under certain conditions. It won't impact the bees. But, I have seen it drift over one mile and damage a commercial tomato field.

I use migratory covers and the Honey Run style ventilated inner covers.

The inner cover allows plenty of room for pollen sub or fondant. I have incorporated an upper entrance in them.

Re: Can I put syrup in empty comb?

There is a commercial beekeeper on Beesource as The Honey Householder who uses a small hand-pump sprayer to fill combs with syrup. He fills combs to use when installing early packages.

Re: Feeding Bees - Could they give up foraging?

There is usually a post or two every year from a new beekeeper who gets concerned when their new hive stop using their feeder.

You can feed too much in the sense that you will end up with sugar...

    Vance,

I wouldn't be so sure about that, just look at the revival of rain barrels.

You could also use water from a dehumidifier.
