    Re: how many brood boxes?

I find that being able to open the brood nest (bottom box) using MattDavy's method works best for me. With only one brood box you will need to find a home for those frames that you have removed....
  2. Re: Can you usually keep more hives in a more urban area?

I'm just south of you and the county doesn't have jurisdiction on your hives for zoning purposes. The State does and your inspector is the one who enforces it. Your are allowed 3 full hives for a...

Re: DIY Crush and Strain equipment

The only things that you will need are three buckets, two lids for the buckets, a 5 gallon paint strainer mesh that I bought at Lowes, a potato masher and a honey gate for the bottom bucket. Take...

Re: Inner cover for mason jar feeding

If you want to use a drill bit, 1/16 bit worked fine for me and I drilled about 12 to 15 holes. I don't really count.

Re: Hive on the beach in a dead palm

Yeah, I'm kind of leaning to the side of not worth the hassle. And the reason you ruined your chain is because a palm is fibrous and full of wind blown sand. As it grows on the beach the sand gets...

Hive on the beach in a dead palm

I work for a city on the gulf coast. While removing and cleaning out a bum nest in one of our beach sand dunes I came across a bee hive that is in a fallen palm. The palm is laying on the ground and...

Re: Backyard beekeeping buzzing in Florida

When your nosy neighbor turns you in to your city inspector and he says your bees have to go, show him this.

    Re: 12 frame dadant hive

Myself, I always wondered how to handle swarm prevention with these large frames. Not like you can just open the brood nest and start another nuc with them.

Just starting my second year so I know what you are going through on trying to prepare.

Yes use them. Doesn't matter what type as long as you are comfortable with wearing them. This is your...

Re: Single deep swarm management confusion

I'm down to only one single deep due to underestimating Varroa and just rookie mistakes. Lessons learned. This spring I am buying 2 or 3 nucs depending on my tax return and starting over. I'm...

Re: Single deep swarm management confusion

Thanks for the good advise. I think sometimes there is just to much information out there. And it's good to have someone just say relax and do what feels right.

Reusing boxes from my dead hives

I had three hives die out this past fall and now buying Nucs this spring. I'm not really sure what caused their decline. I'm leaning toward Varroa over load but not sure, or it could of been a virus...

    Re: Robber screen and SHB

What about using aluminum window screen instead of #8 wire screen. I assume SHB use smell to locate hives and maybe like robber bees it might stop them at the entrance unable to go past the screen....

No orange groves. I live in a urban environment. Neighborhoods and strip malls. I thought about pesticide spraying but I can't come up of where it could be done around me.
