  1. Re: Well, it is winter and I have a mouse in my hive!

If you are worried about protecting larger animals, I have used a home-made version of the plastic boxes with a lot of success. It also turned out to be a lot more humane to the mice.

    I have a pet...

    Re: Boiled linseed oil

My understanding of modern boiled linseed oil is that the faster setting time is achieved through the addition of some very nasty chemicals. I needed to finish some wood work that I new would be...

    Short Answer:

    These are external dimensions.

Long Answer (that I typed out before doing a google search):

I was building my own 10-frame Langstroths, but decided I wasn't a good...

I found this calculator some time ago. It's a recipe site that has a converter for honey volumes/weights and metric/imperial.

Re: Left over fuel in the smoker

I agree that you want more than enough time. Better to have 1/2hour of work and 3 hours of smoke than 3 hours of smoke, 3 hours of work, and notice something interesting (add 15 minutes of study)...

Re: Left over fuel in the smoker

Thanks for all the ideas. Less fuel is definitely a good idea, but I'm not sure how much less I can use and still get a fire going. I'm just using crap I find around my yard, so some of the fuel is...

Left over fuel in the smoker

So I finally got my smoker working well, and it leaves me with a problem. I probably have 3 hours of fuel in there, but it takes me about 1/2 hour (setup to cleanup) to do an inspection on my one...
  10. Re: Spider and Ground Bee Killer Is it just me that is distrubed by this?

Fair enough, I couldn't figure out the domestic use for it. I don't know what the dosage is for humans, or what the concentration of this product is, but I imagine picking up a bottle of this stuff...
  11. Re: Spider and Ground Bee Killer Is it just me that is distrubed by this?

I'd be concerned about the vindictive use of this on the neighbor's Honeybees, but I'm kind of wondering what the valid use of this stuff would be?

Both spiders and ground bees are generally...

Re: What is the stuff on my bee jacket?

Huh... guess that tells me what they thought of the inspection.

Cracking the hive must have triggered cleansing flights. Never actually seen a bee turd prior to that.

What is the stuff on my bee jacket?

During my last inspection, I got covered in quite a few bees. After walking away, and shaking the last of the bees off my jacket, I noticed what looked like (what I can only describe as) "Bee Turds"....

    Re: Bee Sting action photo

    Fascinating image!

This looks like an abnormal sting. If you look at the article on BugSquad, you will see two photos: one of the bee attempting to fly away, and another with the bee holding onto...

Well... a game of "Where's Waldo" should keep me busy until next time I go inspect. ;)

Actually, I think I see them now. Guess I just need to get more...
  19. Re: First Inspection Concerns (aka New Parent Syndrome)

Yes, that is exactly what was done. I came home with a 4 frame nuc, and put them in a 10 frame box with frames.

The queen was not caged, I am taking the vendors word a little bit. She stated...
  20. First Inspection Concerns (aka New Parent Syndrome)

I recently purchased my first nuc. Brought it home, installed it, and left it alone for 5 days.

Yesterday I did my first inspection ever and did a very poor job of it, but am a little concerned by...

New Beekeeper in Nova Scotia, Canada

I just got my first hive a week ago, and am outside every hour to have a peek (from the outside, not the inside). My wife has started to crack jokes about my new girlfriend.

    I recently moved to...
