    Re: Supercedure & Queen Failure?

I have very little experience....but I did purchase two nucs a about a month and a half ago and everything seemed great when I installed them. A few nice days then almost two weeks of...
  2. Re: For those who use the Testors paint pen..

You should be able to get Testors paint at Wal-mart in the toy/model section.

    Re: Organic/treatment free beeks

There could be a great synergy in beekeeping if the TF keepers and those that treat can not argue all the time. Finding and reproducing queens that are hygienic or have some other trait that can...

    A few pics.

I had a chance to take a few pictures on my inspection yesterday, the frames are from my swarm hive I caught last fall. Some of the brood has hatched but this queen is amazing to me. She will lay...

Awesome :applause: Thanks for the laugh!.....I know you are serious though.
  6. Just a quick question about queen cells.....

If bees build and cap a queen cell, is there definitely a larva in it? They won't cap a cell without a larva correct?

    Re: Laying worker...caught!

    Crispin,

Laying worker eggs will hatch into larva, they just all develop into drones.

    Re: nuc prices?

I've bought 5, 5 frame nucs this year in waxed boxes for $125.00 each. But local prices may vary!

Re: Who Re-Queens After the Summer Solstice?

Great idea! I am picking up three nucs next week that should have pre-solsice queens.......if they are big enough by July 1 I will split them and see how they compare also. I really just want my...

    Re: Top feeder

If I remember I'll take a picture of the bur comb in mine tonight and post it. I scrape it out and they rebuild it in a day or two....I wish they would use the time to draw out frames ;)

    Re: Top feeder

The one I have, I like as a feeder. The bees don't seem to drown BUT they build bur comb in there like crazy. I'm thinking of just getting rid of it and using a jar feeder above the inner cover.

Re: Irrational Response to Hurting a Bee?

It is not that anyone thinks they don't feel pain.....for crying out loud, even plants can sense being knawed on by insects. That doesn't mean we have to feel bad about it. Pain is simply a response...

Re: Who Re-Queens After the Summer Solstice?

Great you talked to Mel then....or are you talking about me? Because I'm still researching a system that will work for me. Which is why I asked the question to begin with.

Re: cutouts- free, or who pays to repair

A couple other things to remind people if they are considering getting a pest control service (I have quite a few years of pest control experience)

    - Some companies won't kill honey bees unless...
  18. Re: How do you keep yourselves out of the hives?

That would do it for me....I had a bee in my pants last weekend! Dropped trow and she flew out without stinging ;)
  19. Re: Bee photo wanted for business card, earn a hundred bucks

This thread is AWESOME! I can't believe some of the pics you all have taken, if I could I would have a few of them printed and up on my wall!

Re: Who Re-Queens After the Summer Solstice?

Buy the book and do your own research ;) Or better yet, book yourself a flight and come on out to Michigan for one of Mel's field days and you can see it for yourself.

    Re: Cardboard nuc boxes

I'm not positive on this, but the ones I picked up a few weeks ago had bur comb all over the boxes and it looked like they may have been in there for a while.

Re: Who Re-Queens After the Summer Solstice?

Re: Who Re-Queens After the Summer Solstice?

    grozzie2,

I can't agree with you, not by my own hives (I've decided it is best to treat for mites, at least at this point) but by watching intently as others are doing it. They are using brood...

Re: Who Re-Queens After the Summer Solstice?

    That makes sense to me:thumbsup:

Yes, and yes. This is not my information or theory, but you can buy the book and read it yourself if you like (more reliable that way any way)....
