    Re: lots of drone brood?

I'm not anywhere NEAR experienced (my 2nd year) but I have a top bar and my lang has some foundationless frames... Drones are there all the time in the months that we have a flow going on. And when...

Re: Issue with a caught swarm

I put a frame of brood int he first swarm, and even gave them some nurse bees.. didn't seem to help. I gave the newest swarm some drawn comb, and after 3 days, still nothing. I'm hoping this combine...

    Issue with a caught swarm

So it's been 2 months, and I have a swarm I caught that still isn't doing well.. They superceded the queen at least once already (totally missed seeing the queen cell until after it was hatched) and...

    Re: Awesome moments in beekeping

Definitely an awesome moment. I like to just sit by my hives and watch them do their thing. It's one of the main reasons I keep bees. They are, by far, my favorite insect. Their social nature, the...

    Re: Need a little advice

How big is the cluster? 100 bees is smaller than a base ball.

Re: Nuc Box advantage vs deeps

I split a hive into a deep with three frames if capped brood and the queen then shook in 4 or 5 frames worth of bees. BOOMING and already into a second deep.
  7. Re: I think my bees might be foundation challenged. . . pics included

I don't have any plans to use an extractor for honey. Crush and strain or cut comb honey. In fact, honey is a by-product for me. I'll end up giving most of it away to family. I just want bees. If...

Will this work? It's still the plastic. I plan on making wedges to tack in there, but this way, it's faster!!

    I still can!
  11. Re: I think my bees might be foundation challenged. . . pics included

It will probably take me a bit long to get new foundation. Or, rather, it will take at least 5 days.....
  12. Re: I think my bees might be foundation challenged. . . pics included

I pulled the burr comb off and moved the frame closer. I think, however, at this point, I might just remove the foundation all together (except a strip at the top) and let them draw it out like I did...
  13. Re: I think my bees might be foundation challenged. . . pics included

Well.. Maybe I'll notch the top bars to that the frames can sit closer. They are doing this to the frames on EITHER side of the bars, so it might be easiest?? I'll just work very slowly with a chisel...
  14. Re: I think my bees might be foundation challenged. . . pics included

ah... its' as tight as I can get it, but this also assume the comb on the Top Bar is centered perfectly on it. I'll go it, scrape and press it together even more so.

Would I be better off cutting...
  15. Re: I think my bees might be foundation challenged. . . pics included

Hrm. This particular frame is right next to the drawn comb, so I'm not sure what you mean by a space issue. Unless you are suggesting there is TOO much space between the frame and the bar (from the...
  16. I think my bees might be foundation challenged. . . pics included

So I've recently split my top bar hive into a lang (I want both hive types to learn about each). I put three of the top bars with comb in place of three of the frames. Now, I'm not exactly sure what...

Re: ah! What did I do?

I just realized we are 3 miles away from a large Pepsi Distribution center.... maybe they found mountain dew

It's a pretty bright green. I should photograph it.

Re: ah! What did I do?

So I checked on the girls and while they are BOOMING in numbers now. . .

Why is the uncapped honey GREEN? Did my mold issue get worse and taint all the nectar! ?

Re: ah! What did I do?

One end has the entrance, and the last "board" has three holes with mesh on it..For today, however, I removed the last bar to help ventilate.... risking robbing, I know, but they're a pretty strong...

Re: ah! What did I do?

I definitely got rid of the trash bag. It's a top bar hive, so I could see it from the window (also, I can look in the "rear" portion of the hive where there aren't many bees). It's definitely damp...

    ah! What did I do?

So I went on a trip for a week, and accidentally did something horrible (I think). In an attempt to keep the hive Dry while I was away, I put a trash bag over the cover.... and in doing so...

Re: 9 weeks later: Varroa update

Even if I've never seemed to notice this before? The pale color on the sick bees was OBVIOUSLY different than the lighter color of a freshly hatched healthy adult be. I just never saw the lighter,...

Re: 9 weeks later: Varroa update

It's an entrance feeder. During their start when they didn't have any comb yet, they were dringing over a quart and half a day.

It was fresh made the night before. I'm not sure if drizzling is a...
