Re: 9 Frames in 10 Frame Super

I bought 200 supers from my wifes grandefather. They all had built in frame spacers. Not anymore! I tried them on 2 or 3 hives before deciding that they had to go. It was a shame, as they were...

Re: 500 hive operation Honey extraction line

I use a 28 frame cowen. In a 10 hour day with 2 people we do 100 boxes, about 5-6 drums of honey. I agree the cowen wax spinner is a bottle neck, but the uncapper outpaces the extractor 2-1. That...

    Re: extracting outdoors at night.

We extract in a for-purpose built building, but its hot and crowded. When it gets dark and the bees stop flying we throw open the doors and continue with the night air drafting through. If you are...

Re: Time to start thinking about winter.

Ensure the are fed properly and then check them during warm spells. Suit up and carefully move a frame of feed into the cluster if they need it.

Re: Can I Test my Honey in the Freezer?

I think the OP is under the impression that raw honey contains no water. However raw honey tipically contains 17% moisture. Raw honey will become extremely viscous in the freezer just as pasteurized...

I've tried burlap, but I hate the smell of the smoke, and I'm not totally convinced that it works as well as some other materials to cure aggression. My favorite material is deadfall bark from...

  19. How much is too much? How desperate are people?

Just heard today, that an auction sale in Manitoba had some pretty elevated prices. 400 hives for $260, 1000 supers for $61 each. Someone isn't short of bees. I also hear that Beemaid can't keep...

Last year I found that priming with water, using a toothpick really improved my success %. This year my first couple graft bars I used water primer and had poor success (30%). Switched to dry cells,...

Re: Will caging a cell delay emergence?

I wondered the same thing. Would cell protectors keep the bees from chewing the wax to allow the queen to emerge on the proper day? Sometimes there is quite a thick layer of wax.

    Welcome Dunes,

I don't fully understand your situation, but I almost guarantee that you are over thinking it. If your hives have been queen less for more than 3-4 weeks, than laying worker is...
