  1. Re: Bees in a bunch under the hive (and how it differs from a swarm)

Good news! The bees seem to work things out without our intervention.
  2. Re: Bees in a bunch under the hive (and how it differs from a swarm)

This time of year my hives see 100*+ outside temperatures and the beard up good. Sometimes covering the front of the hive as well. They wait until after dark sometimes to go inside. With evening...
  3. Re: Bee-Pro pollen substitute from Mann Lake plus other ????'s

If you want to try something different, I open fed this dry recipe I found on Besource in July. Soy flour, nutritional yeast and nonfat dry milk in a 4:1:1 ratio. I placed the feeder across the yard...

    Re: Bees clumping in greenhouse

Perhaps in the late evening you could draw the bees to a light placed outside the greenhouse door? They may find their way home then, maybe.
If the bees in your empty hive have moved in you will...

Re: Best suit for extra small female?

I started with a full suit, zipper veil and gloves. After getting comfortable and like Raider said, working slow an methodical. I rarely use more that a veil now. However, it is likely better to have...
  6. Re: Install of Package Bees using "Hansen Method" Bees not leaving package

    Hey John.
I have not used this method but I have installed several packages by leaving the box in a single deep with only four or five frames and the queen cage between the remaining frames of comb...

Re: My Bees Survived - What to do?

Not too close. might only be a problem if you are using telescoping outer covers. If the bees are out flying you can do an inspection. Get the survivor hives into just the necessary equipment, one or...

Re: Upper entrance for migratory cover

I ended up using a standard inner cover with a 2" notch under the migratory cover for now. Two of my five hives use the upper entrances exclusively and the others either use both or just the bottom...

    Re: Entrance reducer

The reduced entrances are for the hive to have a smaller area to defend when necessary. The smallest opening only takes one bee to defend but creates a traffic jam. It is good to use when other...

Re: Upper entrance for migratory cover

Tom, I have also used the screened inner covers, also called moving screens, with a migratory outer but only for ventilation. I am concerned that they might get flimsy if I notched them. How are...

Re: Upper entrance for migratory cover

I checked it out and if I use one of my notched inner covers below the migratory it just might work!

Re: Open Brood Nest without Drawn Comb

I do it all of the time by alternating foundation only frames between brood frames. It actually helps to get the new comb drawn nice and straight, using the brood comb for guides.
  14. Re: Cluster still in package hours after hiving the rest

You could remove several frames and set the cage inside of the hive. They will be out by morning and you can remove the empty box. I only recommend this if your queen has not been uncorked yet...

Re: Upper entrance for migratory cover

I think it may work for me to run a notched inner cover with the migratory cover. I'll have to see if the notch is lower than the lip.

Ray, I like your idea too, do you run front bottom and side...
  16. Re: how many dead bees outside the hives is normal?

I have seen 20-30 bees out in front of my hives and it did not seem to be an issue. If there are some casualties during an inspection or if there is a robbing session that went unnoticed there will...

    Upper entrance for migratory cover

I am thinking of putting an upper entrance into a migratory cover. Has anyone tried to dado or route a migratory cover for an upper entrance? My migratory covers have a small lip that overhangs the...

    Re: Veil only...no suit. Thoughts?

Re: Why I think top entrances are a bad idea

I use a 2" bottom entrance year round. When I add a super I also put on an excluder. All supers have three 3/8" holes in the front about an inch up. The foragers come straight onto the honey without...

Other side bars for WT Kelly frames

Are there other side bars that will fit WT Kelly grooved top/bottom bars? I am not too happy with the side bars that came with the frames I purchased and want to use another supplier.
