Recycled some OLD Hive Stands Today

I needed a place to put a couple hives, so I contacted a friend who owns some property that would be a good location. He told me to feel free to put as many hives as I wanted there. He told me that...

    First Ever Swarm Trap Success

I am a second year beekeeper. My partner and I decided to try to catch some swarms this year. During the winter, we built a dozen swarm traps and set seven of them out recently. On my way back to...

    Re: Veil only...no suit. Thoughts?

I may be unique, but, if I don't wear gloves, I usually get stung on the hands. I usually wear a sheriff's jacket/veil and gloves with long pants. I also have straps to cinch my pants to my boots. No...

Re: First Swarm couldn't have been any easier.

The parent hive was in a garage soffit 20 yards away. The homeowner hired us to return later this week to do a cutout.

First Swarm couldn't have been any easier.

Got a call today about 4:30. This swarm hanging about 5 feet off the ground. We weren't there five minutes.

Don't know why the photo is sideways. It's rightly aligned on my computer.

    Re: Good synthetic gloves?

My mentor told me it's necessary for a new beek to start with two hives. That way the comparison will tell him when something is wrong with one of them. Without the comparison, he may not know.

This blue rubber gloves are a sting ATTRACTANT! I read on here that people like to use the blue thick rubber gloves and were never stung. So I tried them. It's as if the blue gloves are a target. I...

    Question about Ultra Breeze Veil

I am considering an Ultra Breeze, but I really don't like fencing veils. They have a tendency to lie against my face when I am in an awkward position under an eve doing a cutout or bending over near...

    Question about queens.

I started beekeeping last spring and have learned many lessons. One hard-learned lesson is that queens need to be ordered in the fall. Unfortunately, I didn't know that. The good news is that my four...

    Did First Cutout This Weekend

It was in a fallen tree. When I cut a window into the hive, I saw and captured the queen within 30 seconds. Couldn't believe that. They are now in the bee yard being fed and encouraged. Good start.

  24. How much honey should the hive have this time of year?
