    Re: Lost my first hive.

Wow. So sorry to hear it. Was it the cold? or starvation or both? Went into my little colony yesterday - and they are alive - still small but industrious and hopefully now we won't get any more...

    Re: Lost my first hive.

Thanks for responding. I've cleaned up the frame and the fondant is clean as a whistle. Unfortunately, these are definitely gone - hundreds (thousand?) of bees on the bottom board. Again, thanks. c

    Lost my first hive.

I went out today w/ my stethoscope to listen and of my two colonies, it was the bigger of the two that has died - probably in the past week. They were trying to keep new brood and the queen warm and...

    Re: Feeding vs. SHB

That method sounds great. What gauge screen are you using? i.e. how small does it have to be to keep the beetles out?
  6. Re: I want to add bees to an under populated hive

It was a bear - the hive is inside an electric fenced compound now. We'd never had problems w/ bear but this was an observation hive and the smell of the wax and honey must have been more potent...
  7. Re: I want to add bees to an under populated hive

So far, so good. I didn't peek inside but saw guards out this a.m. will check interior later today. Thank you everyone, for input. While reading "Devastated"'s thread I got some great advice on...
  8. Re: I want to add bees to an under populated hive

The story is I was gifted an observation hive w/ lots of capped brood but only two frames. We placed it in the shade and it was doing well - until one a.m. I went out and it has been thrown across...
  9. Re: I want to add bees to an under populated hive

Thank you for responding. Ok, I do know how to look for her - I have two supers on my thriving hive. I've been told that if I smoke the top super, she will move to the lower. Is this a good...
  10. I want to add bees to an under populated hive

Had a hive attacked - as a result, I introduced a new queen but population is way, way too low I would be surprised if there are more than 300 bees in there. Where I need the HELP is this: can I add...

Re: Top feeder - bees drowning in syrup.

Thank you so much. I've been putting a shallow amount of syrup in w/ a long bent piece of screen but they've been cleaning it up completely - meaning it's not really sufficient. Weather here in NH...

Re: Top feeder - bees drowning in syrup.

Thank you for your input. I've ordered a couple of jar feeders - now that we are more into the warm months, they aren't eating as much syrup. The main thing is to stop them drowning. It's...

Re: Top feeder - bees drowning in syrup.

No to the inner cover. That is under the feeder w/ access through the center hole. I've got the top cover over the feeder which doesn't have mold as of yet but I will stay alert to the possibility....

Top feeder - bees drowning in syrup.

My first hive and it has a divided top feeder (sorry if my nomenclature isn't up to par yet). The bees are getting into the actual syrup and some are drowning - as many as a dozen or more a day. ...
