Re: A swarm call emotional rollercoaster

I missed that, so you think the swarm originated from the Maple tree to begin with and they were just returning to their old home?

If that is the case, look for them to swarm again today.

    I...

Re: A swarm call emotional rollercoaster

You can tell when a swarm is getting close to taking off by watching the scout bees doing there waggle dance on the out side of the swarm cluster. If you see more then 10 scouts waggling you better...

    Re: Gloves Make The Difference!

I do a lot of cutouts, some on some pretty defensive hives.

I don't always where gloves, but when I do, I prefer the yellow Platex Dishwasher Gloves.

    Re: Time before swarm moves

Here, most swarms hang out for at least a day and almost never leave after 4:00 in the afternoon.

While stagging swarms don't move often it does happen and almost always because of high winds.

    Hey neighbor,

Fluke thermal imager, that I have for my work as a commercial roofing contractor. Way expensive.

Little digital $30 hand held heat detector, $25 stethoscope, and a $75 bore scope...
  8. Re: Whats the most unusual spot your have found a hive

Turns out not to be too unusual but I've done several cutouts where the bees were located inside the home directly over the fireplace mantel:

  9. Re: About to lose the biggest swarm I've seen-ideas?

One trick I use for easier swarm catching is to save the landing branches from swarms I catch and put them 5' or 6' high in a convenient young tree or bush 20 or 30 yards Northeast of my hives. Once...

    Re: cut out cost

I price cutouts as if the bees are not worth anything. They just never recover quick enough here to benefit from our main flow and end up needing a lot of feed and going into winter. Not to mention...

A lot of equipment ruined, and a lot of work to clean all that up. Terrible, hope you catch the bastards.

    Bottling lightly crystallized Honey

I had to do some spring extracting and have about 40 gallons of lightly crystallized honey in 5 gallon buckets. The honey has been run through a 600 micron filter.

The supers were warmed and I...
  13. Re: Getting attacked with new hive. Not sure what to do

This is a bit of hard one to answer michos without being there and watching them and you.

Before you move them, I would have another experienced local beekeeper come and look at them with you to...

Re: Beekeeping is a very cheap hobby

Or you find a quick way to turn a profit.

I have made money from day one by doing cutouts and catching swarms.

Try doing that with golfs. :shhhh:

  17. Re: What do you use for a swarm capture/transport box?

About 1/3 of the time I'll find a swarm in a tight enough cluster, mostly early or late in the day when they are cool and not flying, that I'm able to trim branches and ever so gently set the whole...

    Re: Rescue of feral bees

The fact that you are seeing good activity is a good sign, particularly if they are hauling in pollen.

I would wait about 10 days from the cutout and do an inspection. Queen will often stop...

    Re: Cut out

Robherc, have you ever seen live capped queen cells, but no other eggs, larve, or brood? I'm thinking they are just a couple of old dead queen cells.

The second swarm they saw from this hive on...

Probably a good call to catch them.

Enough swarms get away unknown to us, that catching the ones we see is I think is good.
