  1. Re: Bee entrance 30ft and 60 ft uo in tree

Trapping them out would be beyond crazy. The $100 worth of Bees will not be worth your $300 in time or more (not counting costs if you fall and break your neck). You need to learn how to play Poker....

    Re: Swarm trap equipment overkill?

Oh....I forgot a couple tablespoons of real honey(Citrus if you can get it) to assure scouts/robbers find you site quickly, making the all important signals go quickly back to the swarming hive.

    Re: Swarm trap equipment overkill?

Great idea. More overkill should be entertained. If it were me (and it is with my deep super traps...lol ) I would go the extra mile. One, I would reduce entrance even smaller to the one inch...
  4. Re: Why not have few very large hives instead of many small ones?

600,000 in a home was likely 5-10 different Hives/Queens. My suggestion is pick up a book on Beekeeping at your local library, it will save you a lot of questions. And when you do have them, then of...
  5. Packages arrive tomorrow / Do I really need Sugar Water with all the Bloom?

    Hi All
I have seven packages arriving tomorrow. I spent this morning preparing their hives. All seven have plenty of drawn comb with two or three frames each of ample reserves of capped honey...

Re: How long should I offer syrup?

They usually tell you when that time is. You know when they stop taking it. Also, check it weekly as 1 to 1 quickly mildews and ferments.

Re: Our girls out in the rain,,,,

Sounds like your girls are Buckfast Italians. Watched mine like minded girls a week ago booming out of the hive while the other hives were like..."OOOooohhh its raining you know". Where did you get...

Re: My Little Bee Bee tree!

I guess I am just confused as to what relevance this has to Bee Keeping? Was the previous tree an Old Snag that housed bees?
  9. Re: A cold night tonight--should I install?

If you do it tonight make sure they have some drawn comb with capped honey. If it were me and I didn't have some honey in there for them I would wait until morning. Either way, pull five frames and...

Re: Bees taking out dead pupa...

The sugar water dripped onto and chilled the brood and they died, so they are bringing out the dead.

    Re: honeycomb in coffee???

If the coffee is real hot it will kill all enzymatic properties. Taste, however, should be wonderful. At 110 degrees being then stirred in then its therapeutic.
  12. Timing of Hives Deep Super Rotation / how many frames of brood?

    Hi All
I searched to avoid redundancy but do not see a post specific to my question. I am wondering what is the best sign to look for before I rotate the deep supers. I seem to recollect in the...
  13. Re: How long can one keep virgin queens caged?

Leave one of the two in the other Queenless nuc and release in 24 hours. With the second queen you can make a lot of good rapport with another local beek by offering her up. Or you could take one...
  14. Re: how I can build A strong hive for the next spring

    Yes ....that is the link
  15. Re: how I can build A strong hive for the next spring

First they all look like medium supers. Older people like using them as not as heavy to move. Four of those filled out would create a strong hive next year. I live in the North. I will be gearing all...
  16. Re: When to add second hive body to package

You want to avoid them swarming. Giving them plenty of space to build into achieves this. Its also nice to have them relatively fill out the first super before adding the second, but you can always...
  17. How can this possibly Beeeeee? Way to much overwintered honey and Superior Numbers?

I inspected a friend’s hive on Sunday, and I could not believe what I witnessed. He builds his own Langstroth hives, but they are, in my opinion, too tight, causing inordinate moister build-up. This...
  18. Shaking foragers and a Queen-will she fly back to original hive given a few hours?

    Hi All
So tonight I borrowed a couple frames with bees from an apiary over a mile away from the house, and I brought it home (no brood borrowed......they are just starting to lay). I then then...
  19. Price to charge for one or two drawn frames with Queen? / Queens Castle

    Hi All
I am heading to the garage this afternoon to construct the Queens Castle that I ordered through Brushy Mountain. I intend to raise some Queens for Fall introduction or emergencies in order...

    Signs of Infection
    • Combs from an infected colony may show spotty brood (unevenly scattered empty cells). These cells, on inspection, contain scales that are a major source of inspection. •...

    Re: Stinky deadout

You should be concerned. It could be foulbrood that caused the death, in which case you need to consult an expert. Not doing the right thing could jeopardize a lot of other bee's in the area. As you...
  22. Saving a really weak hive / Ordered a New Queen

    Hi All
I jumped on my weakest hive today. I found no broad, nor Queen, and figured I better order a new Queen. She is due to arrive Wednesday, but I now question whether I should have teamed...

Re: Do bees have a memory?

Think about it for one moment, can we put all the information it took to send a man to the moon on a chipboard, say in an area no larger than the head of a pin? What makes you think that God could...
  24. Re: How long do you leave a swarm trap in the same location?

You are hunting basically, so the rule of go early stay late applies. Get them up now at least 6 feet off the ground, baited with LG Oil, comb, slum-gum, and wait. Leave them just like odfrank says...
  25. Re: Combine queenless swarm with new split?

Combining them without the newspaper will almost certainly kill the queen, and cause a war. The delay caused by the newspaper is the delay you need to assure the Queens life and blend the two hives...
