    Re: Making up Mating Nucs

It may be a fluke but I've had the best luck by starting as early as possible - as soon as I see purple eye drone brood. March for me.

When those queens start laying the nucs get strong really...
  2. Re: Marin Bee Survey: Hobby keepers - a net population sink

Just a bit more detail please! Brood frames? Vented cover? How much smoke? Smoke alone or smoke + bee repellant?

I'm picturing this as a possible fall back position for when cells get built...
  3. Re: Marin Bee Survey: Hobby keepers - a net population sink

I have a friend who usually sells $2000.00 worth of honey (more or less of course) from 6-8 backyard hives. Been doing it for many years. So it is certainly doable.

    Imho more emphasis should...
  4. Re: Marin Bee Survey: Hobby keepers - a net population sink

High numbers of people dropping out of hobby beekeeping after only a year or two shouldn't be surprising. I bet plenty of us have an embarrasingly long list of abandoned (expensive) hobbies in our...

Re: Heard a taLL tail. Is it true?

There are entrance holes in the next box above the queen excluders, and yes they are all 8 frame mediums.

Re: Heard a taLL tail. Is it true?

I've been pretty danged happy when a few hives produced a little over 100 lbs each. I don't have a tall enough ladder to harvest from a 500 lb hive.

Re: Breeding and rasing bees for packages

"Raising bees for packages..." Package producers seem to be a little bit on the secretive side when it comes to exactly how they do what they do - but I've wondered the same thing and I've been...

Re: Odd request for honey purchase

I got the exact same email a few days ago. I don't know what the scam is but that isn't how a normal purchase enquiry is worded. Anyway I believe in listening to that inner voice when it thinks...

Re: Mixing bee races with new hives

Mine are a little defensive but nothing unmanagable. As you probably know VSH is just one tool - I also treat.

Re: Mixing bee races with new hives

If you have carnis and Italians in the same area you might want to deploy robber screens as a preventative measure. I had a big strong hive of Sue Cobey carnis almost robbed to death in August - the...

Re: question for dr. latshaw aka jsl

I for one really appreciate the input from expert/professional beekeepers on bee source. Thanks.

I must admit that I especially like it when they confirm what I already practice - winter feeding...

    Re: Insects feel pain?

Evolution selects for survival of the species - or survival of the genes depending on how you look at it. Any gene which prevents reproduction can only survive as a rare recessive trait I think. But...

    Re: Insects feel pain?

Such comparisons are so imbedded in language and thought that I wasn't really even aware of it.

Lots of male mammals will fight to the death for mating privileges. Pretty much any and every...

    Re: Insects feel pain?

Don't you think that the nature of a self preservation response (pain, fear etc) might be different in a colony insect where the vast majority of individuals will never reproduce - and will in fact...

    Re: Insects feel pain?

Who knows? But think about what is says about us and our lives that we have the time and energy to even consider such a question.
  20. Re: Best way to use a double screen board to overwinter nuc on another hive

I've only tried it a couple of times, but I concluded that it puts too much moisture into the nucs. I'm in the south though, and I can just overwinter nucs on their own.
  21. Re: Free Shipping Rant (Beekeeping Equipment Big Box Stores)

Wait. You think free shipping is nefarious, but you refuse to pay card fees? Do you think that card services are free? Someone has to pay transaction fees weather you are aware of them or not.

  22. Re: Free Shipping Rant (Beekeeping Equipment Big Box Stores)

Nothing is free. This was only a surprise when I was still using my parents toilet paper, and water, and electricity. Even then I think I had a clue that it wasn't really free.

    When a price is...

I've experimented a lot with robber screens, and most of my experimental versions are still in use - I use robber screens extensively because of the number of hives I have all in one place, and...
