Re: how to mark a queen???

Why not take her, 2 frames of brood, frame of honey and throw them in a nuc and let them think they swarmed. then you won't kill her trying to mark without any practice and you get 2 hives

Re: Broken comb in a TBH

Janne, that is why the ones i made i put the wire at the bottom so the bars don't have a gap.

you can see how they are used in PatBeek's video (where i got the wire idea) ...

Re: Broken comb in a TBH

Make a few of these to have on hand. can actually hang the hardware cloth from the bottom of the bar instead of wrapping it around so you don't have a spacing issue. I think this is a faster and...

Re: new split orienting but not foraging?

Went in today to the main hive and took out all but 2-3 cells so they won't do anything crazy.

then finally broke my stingless streak by being lazy and picking up my tools after i had taken my...

Re: new split orienting but not foraging?

Yea, i'd rather them not do that. I don't have the room for more hives so i'll go in tomorrow and nuke all but the best looking ones.

tried to get a pic of one of the nice cells today but they...

Re: new split orienting but not foraging?

Yea, Most of the frames had a nice cap of honey on the top and some edges. I added a frame of open and capped nectar/honey from the other hive and a 2nd box like a feeder but with the option of...

Yea, I did see some getting after it yesterday afternoon. I just finished painting a 2nd level for them so I can throw a comb of (likely) syrup from the big hive in there later today. Also...

new split orienting but not foraging?

Split off a 5 frame nuc a week or so ago. They have had a few small orientations and one good size one today but there is not much traffic at all.

Maybe they are still a bit light and are busy...

mine has a combo of both. i'm guessing that's by what is available. i had to carve some off a bar end today to get a frame to fit in a not quite square box :P

Yea, finding a place 2mi away isn't easy. I don't really know a place to put them for a few days. RI doesn't really have empty spaces that aren't private farms or whatever.

Best time of day for split

Thinking of doing a split soon to get from 1 to 2 hives. Would it be good to do it midday when the foragers are out so I get more nurse bees that won't drift?

Re: When to Give Them the Whole Hive

keep the nurse bees on there. other hive shouldn't mind them and will help the numbers too. go for fully capped stuff or even find one with capped and some emerging so it will be a quick boost.
