Buy a 1x3x8 piece of wood. Cut it every 3/8th of an inch. Then you get a 3/8x3/4x2.5 piece of wood. Along one side of the migratory cover staple one in the front and one in the back so that it lays...
The best beek I know says you can leave 4 supers on over winter. The bees can take care of that amount of space. I havent tried four yet, but three and two have been sucessful so far.
I'm in full sun in Louisiana. You have to leave the lids cracked or they will all die of heat. In the shade they can get too wet because of the humidity, and it is said it helps with beetles. The sun...
I'm cutting down any empty deeps to supers. Still trying to figure out get the ones with bees in them to a shorter frame, you can put a deep frame in 2 supers while you finish cutting down deeps to...
Aww man, QAL was something I was totally going to try!!! Anybody else think Oregano will produce honey AND season sandwiches and pasta!!
If the queen is a dud, you can combine as soon as you want. The newpaper distributes the bees in time.
If you want, put the nuc in the full size hive, but I ususally dont get comb drawn on a fall...
You can get a hive to draw comb if you are feeding it a weak syrup all the way to October. But on a natural fall flow bees don't do alot of comb drawing. Maybe they will sometimes but I think that is...
Those small black ants like to live inbetween the telescopic cover and the inner cover. I have gone to all migratory covers. Cheaper, can prop up for top entrance and ventalation, and no critters...
A scratcher would still be okay. I dislike knives, so a planer would be the next step up that's affordable.
How many supers do you plan to extract?
Mother and daughter were laying together, then mom swarmed. That's my guess.
Yes, you can tell :) Everyone is at some point! I wouldn't requeen right now. They are being intruded on a lot and in a durth. Most bees are mad in late summer, some outright scary. If a colony is...
I saw your pics!! very pretty!! If that is how the hives look presently, then you have no supers on them. Having supers "on them" usually referrs to having the 6 1/4inch box (super) "on" two 9...
I would never feed sugar with a super on. You do not want false honey in the super. If you want them to draw out frames feed them very weak syrup every day until everything you want is drawn out. If...
On a spring flow from March to the end of June I expect 3 supers or 2 deeps to get fully draw out and filled.
Looks like you are right on the west-east texas line. If east i would say you should get a fall flow. How many hive bodies or supers are the hives? One super only? I really dont like working mad bees...
I use 2x4 office depot labels. They are the cheapest and fit perfectly on pint and quart mason jars. You can download a Word document that has the dimentions on it. I print from Office Depot also;...
I would do the combine even if it's a half mile. The weak hive is dead if you leave it to itself, so the lost of some workers is worth the addition of bees to your stronger hive. Make sure the strong...

This is not going to cost you any money to do, so it worth a try to remove as much observable damage, worms and moths out. Reduce you entrance and give those bees a fighting chance!!
You may just want to stop feeding. If the hive is established, let them go get the fall flow.

I would leave the supers on over winter, but I'm in Louisiana so the thinking could be different.
