    Re: Apivar

I'd look for other causes. There is always that chance but apivar is credit with providing some excellent wintering stats on the Canadian prairies (this one being an exception for other reasons) when...

    Re: Spin float honey quality

Never had a problem with cloudy honey from my spin float. Normally we let it settle in the tanks over night before we fill the honey into barrels, but sometimes we fill the honey in to barrels the...

We still have small patches of snow around, but the pollen from the poplars started coming in yesterday and today the bees were bring in a lot of poplar pollen.

    Re: Oxytet

    14 g is one tablespoon.

Measurements don't need to be that precise. Big hives get more, small hives get less. Load up the end of the hive tool and spread it across the end of the frames with bees.

    Re: Canadian border open?

IMHO if the border were to open, supply and demand as well as red tape would probably drive the package price considerably above $70.
  7. Re: How many packages are produced annually in the US?

Toured both of those operations 2 years ago. Very impressive. If those stats were mentioned during the tour I've long forgotten.
  8. How many packages are produced annually in the US?

I was asked this question and have not been able to find any stats.

    Re: How's your spring????

We're usually thawed by the second week in April. This year, everything is still white with a foot or two of snow left. Heard today it was the latest spring in 141 years.

My home yard is a gravel...

    Re: How's your spring????

Cleared the road to my staging yard at home today. Looks like that yard won't take long to melt if we ever get temperature greater than 2 C.

    Re: Round-up ready Dandelions?

Very true. That's why I spray my beeyard fence lines with a 2,4-D base product once in a while as well as Round Up.

    What spring is right!

Last cleansing fight here was exactly 6 months ago, Oct 16. Still had nothing above 3-4 C this spring.

I work with 30-40 different farmers a year. Wonderful, accommodating people I find. Often times if they need to apply an insecticide they will choose a less effective one to protect my...
  15. Re: Anyone ever store their hives in a barn or greenhouse during the winter?

Lots of info regarding indoor wintering on beesource if you do a search.

Need consistent cold during winter, proper ventilation and complete darkness.

My bees are indoors and have been since...

    Re: neonicotinoid pesticides

Let's leave Albert Einstein the physicist, not entomologist, out of this discussion.

  19. Re: Best way to make splits when your hives are full of bees?

Most times some smoke 1 to 3 times about 5 minutes apart and the top box is nice and full of bees.
  20. Re: Best way to make splits when your hives are full of bees?

Can't say I use any particular method. Time of year, time constraints and queen availability dictate how I approach splitting.

I often use a method similar to MP's but change things up a bit...

Best to go to an accountant that deals with farms if you have no experience in tax prep in my opinion. Shop around some, prices and services provided vary greatly, at least they do around here. Its...
