Re: Stored frames have fermented honey

They didn't seem to mind. After about an hour I checked on them and there were bees all over it.

Re: Stored frames have fermented honey

Thank you. This was my first winter. I was told to wrap the drawn supers in plastic bags to store. Today, I put a couple of them above the top board and put a cover on them hoping the bees would...

    Stored frames have fermented honey

I stored some boxes over the winter and unwrapped them today. The leftover honey fermented in the comb. Will the bees clean that stuff up or is it bad to use those frames? Some had a couple of spots...
  4. Re: Wintering question - left extracted supers on too long

I did notice the girls working hard when it warmed up the other day. I think I'll do just that. Lots of yellow pollen coming in. Thanks

    Re: Bees with no wings

Is it particularly cold in your area or have you had a cold spell for a few days in the last 3 weeks or so? If so, the bees may not have had sufficient numbers to cover the entire brood and as a...

Re: What to do with 30 year old honey

I too would love to have some of that 30 year old honey. If you do decide that it is edible, please consider selling some to me. Just one pound. I know it's probably not worth the hassle but it sure...
  7. Re: Wintering question - left extracted supers on too long

Thanks. I'll give it a shot this weekend. I'll let ya know what works for me.
  8. Wintering question - left extracted supers on too long

I extracted a month ago and put the (3) supers back on to have them cleaned. Left them on too long and they started filling them but not very much. Just a little bit. I realize I should have taken...

    Re: Stings

I got stung while extracting last week. No bees in the honey house at all. Just a stinger stuck to a frame and I got stuck when picking it up. Between my index and middle finger on the left palm....

Re: My first move (2 hives)

Looking good today. Plenty of activity at the hive and just a couple dozen bees moving to and from the old and new location. I believe we have a successful move.

Re: My first move (2 hives)

All is well at Sweet Mike's Honey Farm. The flights subsided at the first sign of sunset and as of pre-dark:30 the girls were all home for the night. I removed the branches as a cutting of the red...

Re: My first move (2 hives)

Bees seem to be doing great at re-orientating to the new spot. There are about one hundred or so hovering at the old location but after staring at them for a while I noticed the bees are flying...

Re: My bees are swarming in my yard!

I would go up there and get them. You want those bees in your box. I'll bet the queen is still in the cluster on the tree. Wait until it cools off a bit and go at it again or if you have gained...

Re: My first move (2 hives)

As of 6:30am: There is very little to be seen at the moment. The sun has yet to breach the horizon. I'll let you know when I come home from work. That's why I used the branches in front of the hive...

Re: My bees are swarming in my yard!

With sugar water it keeps them busy and they fill up on the stuff so it makes for a swolen abdomen and they "can not" sting. Hard to fly, etc... I don't use it.

Don't be nervous. You will do just...

Re: My bees are swarming in my yard!

Early morning before the sun hits them works well or when it starts to cool in the evening but the evening might give them time to decide to leave so I say do it in the morning. Mean bees... smoke....

Great story. Thanks for sharing and enjoy the spoils of your labor. I have heard it wise to use caution when placing feed, like the leftovers you had, too close to the hives as it may stimulate...

    My first move (2 hives)

I moved my hives to a new spot in the yard today and it went without a hitch. When I started keeping bees (earlier this year) I didn't know anything about beekeeping. So, I just put the hive in the...

    Thanks for the info, folks.

I plan to expand a tad in the spring and the other direction would not leave me enough room to do so.

How much room is needed in front of a hive?

I need to move my hives to a location in my yard that is between a fence and a shed. The space is 5 feet wide. Is this enough room for take off and landing? I'm not wondering if it is ideal, but want...
