    Re: Tate's Apiaries Experiences

I started out a few years ago and my first 2 packages of Italians came from Tate's. They did very well, but have now crossed with my Russians. I also have a Hygienic Italian queen I bought from...
  2. Re: What flowers are supplying the polen in NC now? (northwest Piedmont)

Hard to believe they're finding anything with the cold temps and frosts we've had lately. Mine are bringing it in as well.

Re: The best thing I've made from honey

I have a decent dehydrator, but not digital.
What temperature do you use for your crystalized honey?

    Re: New from Southern Virginia

Welcome. My best advice for a beginner is to make sure you can identify the things you should be looking for during an inspection. Eggs are the hardest things to spot...especially when your comb is...

    Chrystalized Honey

What is the maximum temperature honey should be warmed to before the beneficial bacteria starts to die off, when liquefying chrystalized honey?
  6. Re: My first 95 days as a beekeep, where did I go wrong? What's the prognosis?

Aggressive bees could also be because your hive is queenless. How is it that you inspect every 2 weeks but don't know if you have a queen? One of the most important things a newbie can learn is how...

    Re: G'day from downunder

    Welcome!

I have a friend who was woofing at the Permaculture Institute there in Australia, who I sent a pint of my good ole North Carolina honey (cost me $85 to ship!). He, in turn, shared it with...

    Re: Fall feeders

    Hey Beepro...
I drilled 1/16 dia holes around the rim above where the lid snaps into place. When you snap the lid on, it forms a narrow groove between the bucket and the lid, so the bees really...

    Re: Fall feeders

I prefer open feeding. 5 gallons at a time. Fast. Easy. No mess and doesn't drown bees.13606
  11. Re: Cleaning and storing supers after extracting

I've never had that problem. When I remove the super from the freezer, I give it time to thaw and dry out whatever moisture has occurred from ice. Then I seal it in the bag.

    Re: No Queen Laying

Actually, strangely enough, all my hives were heavily backfilled during the main flow. Never had that happen before and can't explain why. My brood boxes were full of honey. I extracted a few...

    Re: No Queen Laying

You're not too far from me and my girls are still laying well. Don't have Carnis, but Russians and Hybrids. I would think its a little early for her to shut down completely. I would take a frame...
  14. Re: Cleaning and storing supers after extracting

I freeze a super at a time for 3 days or so to kill any moth larvae or other undesirables and then I seal them up in a plastic trash compactor bag (they're really thick bags) so critters can't get...

Re: Considering switching to Oxalic Acid

I used to treat with formic acid on a fume board. Results were always good until I lost a queen...maybe from the formic. So I bought the Varrox vaporizer last year. Very easy, quick and really...
  16. Re: red and orange liquid on the rear legs of a a bee or two

I've gotta ask...why would you need to color your syrup? You say to differentiate between syrup and honey...you shouldn't feed with supers on, so everything goes to the brood boxes. So...as Hillary...

    Re: Celebrity Beekeeper

The article states he's only had his hives for 2 weeks and about all he's been doing is feeding them. With a top feeder, you pop the top, dump in the syrup and close it back up. You're never really...

Re: What to do with supers after harvest

I put mine in the freezer for 3 days...one super at a time. After the 3 days, I let them thaw out and seal them up in a trash compactor bag (thicker than garbage bags...don't want to tear). Then I...

  20. Re: How to deal with backfilling properly and Fast

I had a problem with backfilling this year. First time that's happened. I removed the queens out of a couple of my hives during the flow as I thought they might swarm due to congestion in the brood...

    Re: A Question about Splits

Unoccupied space in a hive, or frames gives beetles and moths a better chance of getting a foothold in your hive. A nuc will be easier for your bees to control. As far as cardboard nucs are...
  22. Re: I weighed my hives today....not at all what I expected

The lever operated scale is the way to go. I can check both sides of a hive in less than a minute. And rarely does one side weigh the same as the other. I weigh both sides, record and move on to...

Gonna try my hand at meade making...

I saw a recipe for Persimmon and Cider meade that is my goal, but I'll have to wait till Fall for that. In the mean time blackberries are all over the place, so I'll start with that. I saw a video...

    Can someone identify this tree?

Don't think its native...central North Carolina. The bees are all over it, but its also about the only thing in bloom except for Sumac.

    Thanx

  25. Re: How do you get bees to finish capping honey?

Hate to disagree with you Beek 79, but there's no flow going on here...its been gone for a while. There's Sumac and Clover around and a little Sourwood (which never amounts to anything ) but with...
