Re: growing brood nest no stores

Yeah. I didn't talk to the guy, my wife did (fortunately it was her day off). Had I been there that's probably what I would have told him.

I'm told the animal control guy was surly at first but...

Re: growing brood nest no stores

I had a bait hive out for a while but the animal control guy said to take it down so the neighbor wasn't as worried :( Maybe I can make a new one and disguise it...

Re: growing brood nest no stores

Wow some great info guys! Thanks!

Yesterday evening after reading the first couple of posts I went ahead and put in two new bars in the brood nest. This morning (around 10am) I checked through...

    growing brood nest no stores

We're in the middle of blackberry right now (I'm told it's our major flow for the year) so I left my topbar hive alone hoping that they'd pack away stores (first year hive from package). Every few...

Re: How to manage a TBH

I've read the thinking beekeeper book. I read it mostly for topbar management practices, which was quite helpful to me. The rest of the book, which deals with generic beekeeping and general bee...

Re: Using a Block plane to reduce top bar width

I had the same problem. I ended up buying a 70$ craigs list table saw. I'd live to hear about alternatives though.

In either case none of the evil whatever in GMO crops that you're afraid of will make it through the refining process. In the end sucrose is sucrose.

    Re: Cold weather (minor) bearding?

Yeah i thought maybe that's whats going on but it's odd they don't cover the right half. I also think that maybe they don't all know the right half is open. I had it closed off until a couple weeks...

    Cold weather (minor) bearding?

My hive seems to always have a small clump of bees hanging on the entrance except for times when its really busy, then its just really busy. In the warmer days I just wrote it off as them being a...

I'm super excited about the blackberry flow after a few weeks of making no new comb my package has now drawn out 3 fresh bars and every available worker is clustered in the back making new comb of my...

Re: Fighting the Rise of Bee Rustlers

Out of curiosity where is the black market for bee hives? I've never had a shady character come up to me and say "hey--buddy, you looking for some bees? I know a guy that can hook you up."

How much tea is she drinking ?!:lookout:

I wonder what would happen if you asked her to pasteurize the honey? Bring it up to 80C (that's the maximum temperature before bad stuff happens right?)...

    Re: scale for honey

On what level are you selling this honey? Can't you just do something silly like saying "1 gram" That way it's obvious to the consumer they're getting more than that and you don't have to weigh it....

Help IDing a flower and a bee.

Can anyone ID this flower/plant? I bought it last year as an ornamental and didn't bother even reading the name. Apparently the bumble bees LOVE it. It's about 30 feet away (and around the corner...
  16. Re: feeding 2:1 to discourage brood rearing (vs 1:1)?

it takes 3-4 weeks to go from egg to bee and a couple of weeks at least for bees to start foraging. According to Michael Bush its 42 days give or take a week. In that time I'm guessing the flow...

  18. feeding 2:1 to discourage brood rearing (vs 1:1)?

Around these parts I'm told blackberry is the main flow. Near my hive the blackberries are just starting so my theory is that any eggs laid today probably won't become foragers in time and may end...

    Re: Bees at night

Indeed, they stay busy! I check on mine morning and night (through the window) and they do quite a bit over night. I put 1L of syrup in the hive around 9pm last night. In the morning it was gone...

Re: Orient every time I open the roof.

Yeah it's weird it can be 10am 3pm or 9pm and they'll still do it. I suspect it has something to do with the construction of my hive since the entrance is about 1/2" below where the lid comes down,...

Orient every time I open the roof.

My package is about 2 months old with 9-10 full bars worth covered in bees, mostly brood (seems like a ton of bees to me already!). I built a shingled roof on my TBH and since it's so heavy (asphalt...

Re: should I manipulate my top bar hive?

I'm in exactly the same situation, though with less flow and a hive thats about 4 days older. I'd really like to hear what people think as I was about to post the same question.

ok. I guess it was nice of them to put it by the window then. real easy to check on. Or maybe they're trolling me because I can't help but peek in the window every evening.

Single queen cup. Should I worry?

Some background. This is my only hive. It's a top bar hive (similar to Michael Bush's design but 2" wider, and with a window). It came from a package 28 days ago and I gave it 4 chopped down...

Re: My first days with the Bees

I often put a handful of green grass inside the top of my smoker. It seems to cool the smoke pretty good.
