I read somewhere, don't remember where, that insect pollination of strawberries can increase their size by 50% vs unpollinated strawberries.

Gloves. Never used them. I get stung in the hands sometimes, but the stings really don't bother me.

Re: Colony update here in Pa

Checked my hives today and one was getting ready to swarm. The bees had slimmed down the queen and there were two sealed queen cells along with about five queen cups that had larvae in on the...

Re: Any update on shipping vented jackets??

Received my jacket today. Had to go and try it out in my bee yard. Works great, fits great and it is identical to the one I have from Mann Lake. I understand the ones now from Mann Lake have the...
  8. Re: Ventilated Bee Jackets - Group Purchase $ 89.00 and shipped for FREE

I have the Mann Lake jacket and I take a medium in that. I am 5'10/179 lbs. Don't know if these run the same size as the Mann Lake.

Re: Colony update here in Pa

Checked my last surviving hive today and it I'd dead. I lost all four of my hives this winter. I had 2 full size hives and 2 nucs. On the bright side, I now have lots of drawn comb.

  15. Re: Black Friday @ Lowes: Werner Aluminum Work Platform

Dixie, thanks for the tip. My Lowe's was out, so I went to Home Depot. They matched the Lowe's price, gave me the additional 10% off and gave me a 10% military discount on top of that.

Home Depot sells a tool to open the 5 gallon bucket lids a lot cheaper than the bee supply houses. It is in the same aisle as the 5 gallon bucket lids.

I tried a community feeder last week and had about 200 yellow jackets visit it. The bees were doing great until the yellow jackets showed up and chased all my bees away.

I have 3/4" holes drilled in the front of my top hive body and all of my honey supers, just below the handholds. When I want to close them, a wine cork fits perfectly.
