Re: Consolidated hives to 3 mediums today...

i avoid pollen sub during the winter. Too many days with no flight in our area. I believe it contributes to dysentery. Bees don't need much pollen in the winter. Put that patty on in March or April....

    Re: Virgin queens

I use ammonium nitrate to introduce virgins. I get around 75% success with this method.

    check out these threads...
  3. Re: Experience with liquid Sevin dust and roundup

Has not been my experience. I have a yard at an organic farm and I can't use Roundup there. I have other yards that I spray Roundup to control weeds along the fence rows and in front of the hives....

    Re: Fall feeders

I get better winter survival with fondant or candy boards than I do with sugar. I think the sugar gets inverted with those methods and the bees do better. Just my experience. Also, a study reported...

  6. Re: Experience with liquid Sevin dust and roundup

I used the 365 roundup this year. It kills everything so I am careful where I spray. Really great on the electric fence rows, leaves a nice line for the fence that doesn't short out as easily. I also...
  7. Re: Experience with liquid Sevin dust and roundup

I spray when I get to the yards, haven't worried about time of day. Bees are flying when I spray.

Re: Glenn Apiaries - Pol-Line queens

I'm only running around 40 with Pol-Line or supersedures of a Pol-Line right now. Only had one swarm this year. I don't use excluders and run 2 deep brood boxes with them. Very happy with them.
  12. Re: workers tossing dead greyish bees out of hive - sign of starvation or??

saw lots of drone brood in front of the hives this morning. Lots of dead drones in the grass a little further out. It's that time of the year.

Re: US to ban GMO s and Neonicotinoids

2 hogs don't make a story. There are thousands of perfectly healthy steers, hogs, chickens, etc. slaughtered after being fed GMO grain. I say hogwash.

Re: When and how much to feed, central MA

Depends on location and how many hives in close proximity. And each year is different. No way to estimate.

Re: When and how much to feed, central MA

purple loosestrife is in full bloom and there seems to be much more around this year [maybe the cold winter killed the bugs that attack it]. Goldenrod is just blooming and Japanese bamboo is budded....

    Re: Combining Hives

If there is a flow I don't bother with the newspaper. I just combined 2 weak nucs this afternoon, just put on on top of the other. Bees will sort it out.

Re: Is CCD still alive and well?

None were diagnosed with CCD to my knowledge. Everyone is now blaming neonics.

Re: Is CCD still alive and well?

My understanding is there has not been a verified case of CCD in the last year.
  25. Re: DO I need to treat first year package bees for mites?

So use OA vapor or amitraz if you want to save the hive. Treatment needs to be ASAP so the bees can raise healthy winter bees.
