    Statistics...

I can only speak for my trials. Treated colonies have 3 % losses/year. Non treated colonies between 15 and 90 % per year. There is a clear and significant difference.

    Re: housel positioning

Agreed. I didn't and don't find any pattern at all in all the hives in fixed comb that I runned and still run.

The bees know. If it would matter, the bees would take much(!) more care about...

    Re: $1.75 Honey

We should turn the tables and send our quality honey to China. For example I had a request from China for bulk "organic pollen". Maybe they value the relatively pesticide and sugar free honey, too.

  7. Re: Warre hive just for thoughts and discussion

I sell cut comb and pressed honey from fixed combs. But an user of the German Warré forum showed his modern version of the extraction cages:

That's him in person, back in the good old days.

You see a fixed comb hive in the front, he is preparing for extraction. Also you see the cages there, stacked. ...
  9. Re: Warre hive just for thoughts and discussion

The "inventor" Émile Warré actually did extract his fixed combs. And describes it in his book. The one that nobody seems to read. He put his frameless combs into an extracting cage, so they don't...

    Steinel heat gun Type 3482 2,000 Watt ~140 US$

Bought an used generator, 2.4 kW. For ~160 US$. If you turn up the heatgun too much, the generator blows. So I go with lower temperatures and need to...
  11. Re: Warre hive just for thoughts and discussion

Huh? Can't see why this can't be done with fixed comb beekeeping. In fact this manipulations are even described in a medieval book about beekeeping in bee gums/log hives. (written by Nicol Jacobi, in...

Must be a global problem. Same here in Germany: buyers don't buy at the moment. There are rumors out, that prices will go down this year, here in Germany that is. At least for bulk honey. With no...

So hopefully we all don't have to experiment another 30 years with patties. :shhhh:

What were the three major mistakes you made? What were the three major important positive findings?

    You could try Icko:

Yes, it is sometimes strange. Most here buy their uncapping knifes from the US since there is virtually no decent hot knife available here. Maybe two brands, but the heat of those knifes is way to...

You get the same results in wooden hives.

Another disadvantage of EPS hives: how do you clean them and how do desinfect them? Fire? Caustic soda?
