    Re: TBH's in cold climates

You will be fine in Helena make sure you insulate in winter( mine seems to do better if I do) and they can get rid of moisture. I use a top entrance to accomplish the latter.

    Re: 1st small harvest

Good for you, I think the best flavor is fresh comb like that. I find that when it has some pollen in the comb too it can be a taste sensation.

    Re: Table Saw

Get a sawstop. They are expensive but your fingers are worth it. Cheaper than a trip to the er and no guilt. I got one and love it.

Re: Top Entrance -- Pros & Cons?

I like top entrances better., I have both top and bottoms.

Re: Help buying a Top Bar Hive

You can build a top bar with a hand saw and a drill. Unless you like spending the money or really want a pretty one. I recommend you try to build your 2. Don't get fancy you don't need a neat roof...

    Re: what to leave

Depends on what you read. At least 60 lbs, figure out what your honey bars weigh/average mid summer you will know. Or figure out total area of comb on one of your bars and compare to deep frame...

    Good for them.

20 degrees here and suppose to be -13 tomorrow. I am hoping I fed my little colonies enough.
  23. Re: Top Bar Design Questions (The Bars Not The Hive)

I go with a mix of 35 and 38mm. They never seem to choose the right ones though. Ripping commercial 2"(1 1/2" planned ) works nice for one consistent size.

For comb guides I root through my scrap...
  24. Re: Who wants to talk about unusually warm winter weather?

    Regarding the weather

We have been mild for most of the fall but -25 last month with a week below freezing probably averages out to normal temps.
