    Split to save dying hive

The saga of the dying hive continues.

Last Saturday I gave the hive a good going over. No eggs or queen. So I shook the hive out and re-queened. She's dead. They didn't even let her out of her...

    Re: Lurking under the TC

Thanks. I don't mind the spiders around the hive. I've seen them with wax moths, too. :D

Re: Laying worker hive? (with pictures)

Thanks. I was a little confused as some worker cells had only one egg, while others had more than one. I only just discovered the situation a few days ago, so haven't done much. Following a...

    Lurking under the TC

I about passed out from shock when I saw this guy lurking around under the TC this morning. It's hard to tell from the photo, but he's the biggest jumping spider I've ever seen. And he got one of my...

    Laying worker hive? (with pictures)

This is a follow-on to a previous post, where I bemoaned the fact that I thought I had a laying worker hive. I opened it up again this morning and took the following photos. One is of eggs laid in...

Re: I've got a laying worker hive

Thanks, I think I'll give it a try. My hives are right in the backyard, so it won't be much work. It's cheaper, too.

Did you shake the hive out to try and get rid of the laying worker, first?

Re: I've got a laying worker hive

By clean out, I mean brush the hive out to get rid of the laying workers before I requeen. I'm keeping the comb.

Well, I didn't get stung at all last year. I was hoping to keep it up this year....

Re: I've got a laying worker hive

I couldn't find a queen, but they had built several new queen cups that were empty. All the cells that I could find that had eggs had them widely spread out, on the sides, two or three to a cell.

I've got a laying worker hive

One of my hives was looking a little lethargic, so I opened it up this morning to take a look. Sure enough, they've got a laying worker. I could see multiple eggs in the cells, clear as day. No...

    Scavengers in bait hive

How concerned should I be about scavenging bees in my bait hive?

I have a bait hive in my apiary and today I noticed bees coming and going from it. Unfortunately, it turned out just to be...

Re: How Much Syrup can they Drink

I've had my hives go through more than 2 liters a day. When I used a frame feeder with my first hive I had to refill it every day. What kind of feeder are you using?

    My bait hive has caught...

Re: New Hive stains around entrance

I agree that if it's not poop, then it's probably pollen. Both of my hives have a yellow tint to them on the landing board and around the entrance.

    Re: Robbing?

I agree: get some robbing screens on. My first hive got robbed almost as soon as I got it home, and the screen gave it the fighting chance it needed to stay alive.
