Re: Best Way To Expand In Year Two?

13? wow. And only lost one over winter. Is it just me or do nuc splits seem to handle overwintering better than one big hive, cause that seems to be a common theme amoung those that overwitner nucs....

    Re: Long Lang

Yeah, doing the same with mine, got the idea from someone here on BS. Its a good idea when you dont have the tools to make a rabbet for the frames.

    Re: feeder

Make a separate follower board that has a hole big enough for bees to pass through, place in back of hive. I plan to do this with my hives, though once I split them down to 8 frame nucs, I'm gonna...

    Re: Long Lang

Or you could do what I do and not use a queen excluder... I found with my top bar that brood was limited to the front of the hive and the queen never crossed honey to lay in empty comb. In hindsightI...
  5. Re: Finally got around to putting together board dimensions for my long lang

Actually in hindsight I'm probaby gonna scrap it being the entire length and just do cutouts on the two ends and then drill holes in an alternating pattern to reduce drifting on splits/multiple...
  6. Re: Serious Concern - capped honey has black blotches in it

Is that a top bar hive with vertical sides? If so can you PLEASE post some more pics? I'm thinking of doing something similar either next year or the year after that and its hard to find anyone who...
  7. Re: Finally got around to putting together board dimensions for my long lang

Yes, I got the idea from someone else who does long langs (hasnt posted) but used them as support stringers because he/she was using 3/8s ply and wanted the extra strength. he reason I'm doing it is...

Re: Help buying a Top Bar Hive

For a really simple hive design, try using my design found on this thread The 1x2s up top are for lang frames. Granted its not a KTBH design, but it doesnt have to be, and bees will attach the comb...

Re: Best Way To Expand In Year Two?

#1 would probably work too, depending on your fall honey flow though you may need to feed. Just make sure that if you DO go with #1 you do it early enough and dont starve them of resources, namely...
  10. Re: I need some pointers on foundationless frames

My first year (read, last year) was doing Top Bars, naturally I didn't have any foundation. I did however keep on top of new comb production and made sure that any comb was built straight. This year...

    Re: frames staples or brads

The problem with that Gary is that you need someway to hold them together while the glue cures, and unless you have 20 12" clamps, it would take forever in a day just to do one box of frames. No...
  12. Finally got around to putting together board dimensions for my long lang

Ok so I took a few minutes in MS Paint, it may be simple but it works.

    16356

Its designed to hold up to 30 deep frames without a dividers, or house 4, 8 frame nucs, possibly 6 if the nucs are...

Re: Help buying a Top Bar Hive

I second the whole "Woodworking Shop" as $300+ is overly expensive for just a hive body.

Re: Swarm prep or queen replacement?

Thats swarm prep. The workers are trying to get her down to flying weight so she can swarm with them.

    Re: New Beek in PA

With comb guides, I never had a problem using 1x2s as the top bars, What would usually happen is they might draw out the top of the comb further than the bottom where the brood is, but for the most...
  16. Re: I think my bees might be foundation challenged. . . pics included

Id just use a starter strip and place between two brood combs
  17. Re: I think my bees might be foundation challenged. . . pics included

Your problem is the plastic. Trying to get bees to draw out on foundation next to natural comb is difficult but plastic is worse. Try this. Remove the foundation from the bottom box at let bees draw...

Re: Not all frames are created equal

Just a hammer an nails. This year its only the one hive so I can't justify a whole compressor/airgun for frame assembly.

As for where I got the frames, its a store in Pickens called Beewell...

Not all frames are created equal

So I had a rather sobering experience with some frame assembly. In my area we have two choices for beek supplies, one in my case is closer. Their frames are a bit more than the other, look nicer...

To be fair, Honeybees are very important agriculture livestock. Fairly certain there are similar grants out there for things like chicken, cattle, and anything else we raise to better our...
  21. Re: Long Hive with Lang frames-multi use. Production or queen rearing

thats a nice hive and I'm actually going to work on one pretty much exactly the same, for some of the same purposes. I plan to make more bees with hives (overwintered nucs actually) and break it down...
  22. Re: I just remembered why I switched to top bar hives!

Add either an empty bar or a bar with empty comb in the middle of the brood nest. I did that a few times in mine and they kept drawing out comb until somewhere around august/september.

    Re: Opinions on Protective Clothing

I think a full on suit isn't strictly needed unless you are like a commercial beek that has a couple hundred hives all stirred up. It would just take alot of time to get on when a simple veil or...

Re: Kregg Rip Cut circular saw guide?

I think I'm going to go with what rhaldridge did in the post and put a stringer around the top at least. I'm just wondering if 3/8" plywood is good enough to overwinter in the upstate of SC, we dont...
