Your hive looks great. I used 1 x 4 douglas fir for the hive legs and it's just fine.

    Re: top bar feeder

After working the hive, lots of bee's are in the lid and on top of the bars. I close the lid on the block leaving a gap for the bee's to escape back into the hive.
The bar with the holes is...

It goes inside the hive at the rear. By having the feeder on the other side of the follower board, It makes changing the feeder easy.

    Re: Hive construction question

Pick the wood that you like. I used pine. It's only the first year and it's holding up well.
You stated that you have the skills and tools to build what you want. I watched a u-tube

    Re: TBH Build

I will agree about the thinner bars. If I had a table saw when I built my TBH I would have ripped the bars down. When I do a check on all of the bars I seem to smash a few bees when closing up the...

Your ant guards look like they will work. good job. I had ant trouble. My hive is under an oak tree that was full of ants.
I put boric acid around the base of the tree. and put diatomacous earth...
  11. Re: Please help me with the final setup of my first TBH

Because I have a bunch of wood working tools. And I'm not afraid to see what I can build. LOL Just kidding. I like to build things.
  12. Re: Please help me with the final setup of my first TBH

That looks really good. Let us know how it works.( with pics.)
  13. Re: Please help me with the final setup of my first TBH

I bent the hardware cloth up so that it was flush with the jar lid. The bees would empty a 20 oz. jar in two days.
  14. Re: Please help me with the final setup of my first TBH

    Yes, it worked great.
  15. Re: Please help me with the final setup of my first TBH

    Rairdog

I made a mason jar feeder that sat on the opposite side of the follower board and has a screen to keep the bees from coming out when I changed the jar. I only made five small holes in...

Re: Bees are building new comb

Try putting an empty bar between the full bars with comb. I would place an empty bar between bars 2 & 3 and between bars 3 & 4. When I add empty bars between full comb, the bees get very busy making...
  17. Re: Please help me with the final setup of my first TBH

Nice job on the hive. When I installed my bees in April I hung the queen cage between bars 3 & 4. On a 5" piece of wire. Released her two days later. The comb was fine....

I though my hive was having a robbing problem. Lots of bees flying around the entrance, some bees dashing in the entrance. No fighting.
I asked about this at my bee meeting tonight. They said it...

Re: N00b top bar hive with video tour

Yes, the feeder sits on the bee free side of the follower board. I just cut a slot that lines up with the hole in the feeder. The feeder sits flush against the follower board.

The bar with the six holes in it has #8 screen stapled on the under side. In the summer months the temps. can be over 100 degrees. The thought is to help vent the hot air in the hive into the dead...
