I bought a used 10 frame radial Maxant a few years ago. Very heavy duty and runs like new. Serial number 67. A Maxant rep told me it was probably made in the 60s. I'd definitely buy a new Maxant...

I buy 1x10 for deeps and 1x8 for mediums and tack the excess ripped off the 1x8 on to the deeps to get the right depth and no waste.
I have 12 production hives and 6 started from nucs this year. I plan have around 20 hives until I get time for more or run out of energy for that many.
Uncapping - bread knife and scratcher. I saw...
In "Beekeeping at Buckfast Abby" Brother Adam said they converted to grouping hives i clusters of 4 with each facing a different direction to eliminate drifting. I have 4 nucs I started this year...
I agree with Mike Palmer about using industrial grade lumber. I don't buy anything like the amount he describes, but a local lumber yard offers what the call "crating lumber" it's #4 as opposed to...
In that same ABJ or the Jan Bee Culture, not sure which, there is an article on the CAP Grant project run by Dr Delaplaine from the Univ of GA. It was a summary the projects conclusions after 5...
From Dwight D. Eisenhower "plans are useless, but planning is indispensable."
Dr. Marla Spivak from the Univ of Minn. was at the fall Missouri State Beekeeper's meeting and talked quite a bit about propolis. Here is a link to a page on making tincture from their web site....
I got a copy of the plans last year. The jig works great. Makes nice hand holds. It's better than nailing on cleats. Thanks for sharing the design.
I agree with sqkcrk. Don't look it as starting a new business, rather and expansion of your ongoing agriculture business. Not sure about the fence, but everything else I would write off as current...
Good to know. Thanks!
I've caught lots of skunks in live traps in the last 3 years. Relocated them all about 5 miles away and across an interstate highway and none have sprayed. I was told by another local beekeeper to...
Just remembered I did a sketch of the pipe/disk insert to explain this once before. Here is a link.

Running a fan across a flat pan of honey will introduce a lot of dust. I have used a method that works fairly well. Sorry I don't have pictures but I'll describe as best I can. Cut the flat center...
I read that a couple weeks ago. More in depth than anything else I've seem.
When honey crystalizes the moisture content of the liquid portion goes up and fermentation can start.
Very cool graphs. Makes me want to put a hive on a scale. How long have you been tracking? Do you have prior years to compare?
I tried it on 3 hives earlier this season. Before the hot weather and didn't get a reaction like yours. Did sugar roll tests on two of the treated hives a couple weeks ago and both were below...
I also have a flow going which I assume is from soy beans. Bees are working early and quit when it gets hot. Our clover has been burned out for a while. How long can a soy bean flow last?
I Tried this early this spring. I made up a 5 frame nuc with a frame with swarm cells. I protected two cells with push in cages I made from #8 hardware cloth. I think I was lucky in that the queen...
This season I extracted honey in late May after the black locust flow. Then in June the bees were working my persimmon trees for two weeks from early in the morning until dusk. The honey I...
I use top entrances and I remove a frame and use a division board feeder to feed syrup. I use the kind with a cap and ladders to avoid drowning bees. I've also experimented with a couple different...
I would give them a frame of eggs and young larvae. If they don't start an emergency queen cell they are probably not queenless and you have a new queen who hasn't started laying yet. If you still...
The method described above is somewhere on the University of Florida website I think. Used it last year with only pvc. It worked fine. Respond if you want more info. I think I have some pictures.
You can remove the excluder now and just put it back in a week before your new queen will arrive. Then when you need to find her, the box with eggs and very young larvae will be the one she is in.
