When my dad took me under his wing 67 years ago at age 8.

I strongly recommend that you do join one or more local bee clubs and attend all of their meetings, find a mentor, and attend their annual...

Re: Empty Gallon Lined Paint Cans

    One word of caution:

The lining coating scrapes very easily. For example: when stirring sugar to dissolve it in water with a metal spoon. Any nick or scrape in the coating will allow corrosion...
  5. Re: Hive humidity - how much is too much?

    shinbone,

I am a scientist too, but I think that you are over-thinking this problem.

You know that you have too much moisture in the hive and that it can be hazardous to the bees health. Fix...
  6. Re: Hive humidity - how much is too much?

    Shinbone,

I'm just to your south in Colorado Springs and my "stack" is nearly identical to your description except that I use a 4" high quilt box (QB) full of wood shavings sandwiched between the...

Re: Your thoughts on this Fondant

    Steve,

I bought a four gallon bucket of baker's fondant about five years ago and I still have at least half of it remaining. In the dry Colorado environment it got rock hard and the bees couldn't...
  8. Re: Propolis on purpose: Building boxes ???

    Take a break dudes!

The bottom line is to make a box that has an average life expectancy with a minimum amount of time, effort, and expense.

  9. Re: Propolis on purpose: Building boxes ???

    Harry,

That's a deal, but the way I keep bees the boxes are seldom under diagonal compression or tension. Even if I'm sitting on them.

P.S.: Thanks for volunteering to work as a Moderator on...

    Re: Bear Discovered My Hive

    Beerz,

Like my fellow Coloradan beekeepers (BlackForestBees and MTN-Bees) I also have to stay on bear alert. You might want to take a look at something that I posted several years about how my...

    minz,

I too build most of my woodenware but out of old second-use lumber that is not going to change anymore. I use rabbet joints on all of the box corners because when glued up with TB3 they are...

    Re: Top insulation and vent

    PAHunter,

Why not put a nail, screw, or wooden cleat block inside on all four sides of your medium to temporarily support the "framed insert" up 3/8 inch ? You still get double use of your medium...
  14. Re: Not feeding, why??? Low on stores, and not feeding.

    dsegrest,

Like you, I also lower the pH to closer to honey but with a dash of ascorbic acid (vitamin C). I also add a dash of electrolyte to improve bee health.

  15. Re: Not feeding, why??? Low on stores, and not feeding.

    Larry,

HBH = honey bee healthy. Either commercially available or there are many home made recipes available here on beesource - just do a search. It is a feed additive consisting of essential...
  16. Re: Not feeding, why??? Low on stores, and not feeding.

The addition of either commercially made or home made HBH to the 2:1 feed will make it much more attractive to the bees.

  21. Re: Cluster of bees under hive on Screened Bottom Board

  22. Re: Denver area beeks - how does your honey production look for 2014?

Sorry to hear that your harvest story is so close to mine. My worst year in the previous six. My thoughts are that any honey put up in the earlier part of the year when conditions were a...
